CHOWK is a dance company and school based in Singapore. Its aim is to blur the dichotomy between tra CHOWK- A Centre for dance.

The word chowk in Hindi means a town square, a place where people gathered. In Odissi CHOWK is the basic posture of the dance. CHOWK- a Centre for dance, started in 2007 with a handful of students, classes were held all over the island wherever there were studios available. In March 2012 CHOWK found a permanent place at Emily hill. Initially CHOWK was started with the sole purpose of es

Every instrument carries a history. Every body that moves carries one too.

Last month, Chowk and Nadi Singapura shared the studio — six shows, two practices, one larger conversation. Nadi’s work asked us to sit with what goes into making an instrument. Chowk brought Migration of Form into that same space — how Odissi travels, shifts through bodies, and stays alive when we hold it together.

Grateful to .singapura for the memorable collab and for having us as part of Open City. To everyone who came through — thank you. 🙏

Rooted in literature, ritual, and movement, One Part Woman is a contemporary dance-theatre work inspired by Madhorubagan by Perumal Murugan.

Set against the backdrop of a temple chariot festival in colonial-era Tamil Nadu, One Part Woman asks: What happens when personal longing collides with social pressure? Here’s a glimpse into the world we built.

If this work speaks to you, perhaps the process behind it might too. Click our link in bio to learn more about our 2026 Artist Residency in Pondicherry - we’re currently taking in applications! Sign up today 🫶🏽

What happens when 18th-century Baroque music meets the ancient grammar of Odissi?

For the upcoming Chowk Studio Series, we are proud to present "Devotions: Lieb ohn alle Maße" (Love without Measure) by Associate Artist Wong Yong En.

A musician by training (YST Conservatory) and a dancer by soul (Chowk), Yong En’s work is a fascinating piece of practice-based research. She explores the emotional extremities of J.S. Bach’s St John Passion, finding the bridge between the European "Doctrine of Affections" and the Indian concept of Rasa.

Accompanied by percussionists Tan Lee Ying and Sng Yiang Shan, and featuring arrangements by Ramu Thiruyanam, this is more than a performance, it is a study of grief, euphoria, and the pursuit of discipline.

Experience the intersection of two worlds.

Raka Maitra is known for her defiant resistance to easy categorization, Raka’s work is a masterclass in tension between the classical and the contemporary, the stillness of tradition and the urgency of modern movement. As the Artistic Director of CHOWK, she has spent years deconstructing the forms to find a language that is raw, visceral, and deeply intellectual.

What to Expect in Her Lab
Working with Raka is an invitation to strip away the "decorative" and find the core impulse of a movement. Under her mentorship, you will:

- Explore the rigorous geometry of the body.
- Learn how to deconstruct traditional motifs into contemporary tools.
- Find the silence and weight required to make every gesture meaningful.

The Experience
To work with Raka is to be challenged and inspired in equal measure. She brings a sharp choreographic eye and a profound understanding of how a body can carry a story without saying a word. Whether you are a performer or a choreographer, her guidance will push you to discover a more honest, powerful movement language.

Ground your practice in the presence of a master.
