Some merry to sweeten the start of 2026. This is a testament to my professional ability beyond the scope of the typical academic tutor. My pleasure to have accompanied you since 2021, Y! 💕

🥳 𝐀𝐋𝟑 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞!!! 🎉

Y's squeal of delight soon dissolved into tears of joy. Father struggled to keep his mobile phone upright as he tried to compose himself. Mother, while wiping Y's tears off her cheeks, cried too.

Did Y score 4 straight AL1s? No. She scored AL12.
But, why did Y and her parents cry?

𝗔 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝘁, 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗲

I first met Y when she was in Primary 2, back in 2020. She is not of Chinese descent, and for years, she worked incredibly hard on her proficiency of the Chinese language. We saw steady progress, but Primary 5 hit hard.

It was a tough year. She started losing confidence in her Chinese. The frustration was real. It took pure 𝙜𝙧𝙞𝙩, 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 from Y, and constant support and encouragement from her parents (and me!), to keep pushing forward.

As her tutor, my goal wasn’t just to teach the language, but to help her overcome her mental blocks and find the joy in incremental improvements. Better grammatical accuracy in oral, correctly spelling a phrase, or understanding a difficult passage; every small improvement was a victory we celebrated together. We focused on stabilising all her subjects, Math included, and trusted that hard work would pay off.

It paid off - an AL3 for Chinese, surpassing my earlier expectations of AL4.

I shared the family's emotions, the loud cheers and crying, as if Y was the top scorer. This was Y's biggest victory ever in her personal journey attained through a tough, character-building journey.

We celebrate not the perfect scores, 𝙬𝙚 𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙔'𝙨 𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙡𝙖𝙮 𝙖𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙙.
