English in Secondary Two is a big leap from secondary one.
Students are expected to write discursive essays that require critical thinking. For comprehension, there will be questions such as “Language Use”, “Irony” and “Unusual yet effective” that require the right techniques to answer them.
As an MOE-certified educator and author of 10 Reference and Assessment books (please visit my secure website moenrichment.com for details of the books), I work closely with schools to curate content that is relevant to the school curriculum. These books are used by the schools as teaching material and reference guides.

English in Secondary One is the foundation to more rigorous demands of the language from secondary 2 onwards. Still, there are techniques to tackle paper 1 editing and paraphrasing in comprehension. Equipped with the right techniques, doing well for English can be a walk in the park.
As a certified MOE educator and author of 10 Reference and Assessment books (please visit my secure website moenrichment.com for details of the books), I have worked closely with schools to curate content that is relevant to the school curriculum. These books are thus used by the schools as teaching material and reference guide.
Students will strengthen their word power and learn the fundamentals to tackle editing in Paper 1. They will practise the Show and NOT concept when writing personal recount essays. Apart from this, they will be equipped with descriptive phrases to facilitate their language expression.
For Paper 2 lessons, they attempt test papers from the different schools.

GP essays require facts to substantiate one’s arguments. And facts must be credible where students are required to state the sources. Still, some students do poorly in GP writing because they fail to link their arguments back to the topic with key words or phrases.
Another component in GP where students struggle is the Application Question (AQ) in comprehension. To tackle AQ well, you must be familiar with characteristics that define our Singaporean society. Again, there are techniques to apply in order to do well in AQ.
In P1 lessons, students will be presented with a range of topics ranging from education to society, and environment to the economy. They will brainstorm ideas & I shall facilitate by providing the facts or stats. And in Paper 2 lessons, they attempt papers from various JCs (collected from past students). Group size is kept small (3 to 4 each group), to ensure personalised attention for everyone.

In upper secondary, students are expected to write critical essays such as Expository, Discursive and Argumentative types. These essays require you to substantiate with facts, statistics or real-life examples. Not many are confident to handle such essays due to limited exposure.
For comprehension, there are question types such as:
i) Language Use
ii) Irony
iii) Unusual yet effective
iv) Writer’s Craft

To do well for editing in P1, all you need is to look out for the 8 types of errors. Students who are not aware of this typically struggle or are not consistent in their performance.
For comprehension, there will be questions such as “Language Use”, “Irony” and “Unusual yet effective” that also require the right techniques to answer them.
I hereby attach an S2 Comprehension Competency Evaluation and an Editing Practice for your child. Please feel free to get your child to attempt them. Send me his/her answers and I shall share with you if your child is adequately equipped with the right skills. I am happy to share that this objective evaluation is complimentary.

I was invited to conduct a seminar last week during the March school holidays to share with parents and students some techniques for tackling Editing, comprehension and visual texts.
It gives me an immense sense of fulfilment seeing happy and satisfied faces.
