𝐖𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐚 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭?

I would think so, right? It’s an important program that schools often organize to introduce young children to different community groups, especially those in elderly or nursing homes.

Often, children are tasked with creating meaningful projects to engage and interact with this vulnerable group. It is something significant and impactful.

So, when we were approached by our client to equip their leaders with skills to run activities designed to engage and assist the elderly population in a specific nursing home, we jumped at the chance.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐌𝐀 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤.

While PERMA is a vital pillar of Positive Education, it’s equally important in designing activities. How so?

𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭:
1) Instill 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 and happiness within the elderly.
2) 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞 them sufficiently, ensuring the activity isn’t just one-way traffic.
3) Focus on building a 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 between the elderly person and the student.
4) Be 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐟𝐮𝐥 and important to the elderly person, evoking genuine feelings.
5) Allow the elderly person to have a sense of 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 upon completing it.

So, the activities couldn’t just be a skit or a musical performance. Do those fulfill the PERMA requirements? Not quite!

By providing these young leaders with the right framework and guiding them on the needs of the elderly, they came up with delightful ideas and explained how each one met the PERMA objectives.

𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, 𝐈’𝐦 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐝!

𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐚 𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐲𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠? 𝐎𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞, 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐲𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠?

You might think, "Nah, I'm not a cyberbully."

But actions like taking screenshots of someone's message, Instagram post, or photo and sharing it in a private group chat to laugh at that person constitute a serious form of cyberbullying.

Unfortunately, it's more rampant than we think.

In a survey from a few years back, 1 in 3 youths in Singapore reported being victims of cyberbullying. The numbers have likely increased since then.

What’s causing this? Worse still, many youths suffering from cyberbullying may have friends who are committing cyberbullying towards others.

Sad, isn't it?

This is why, for one of our Peer Support Leaders (PSL) Training sessions, our focus was on equipping Peer Support Leaders to create SAFE Digital Spaces within their schools!

𝐖𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬. 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐏𝐒𝐋𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐲 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐧𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧?

Moreover, much of the focus for PSLs has been on dealing with cyberbullying after it has occurred or panicking and informing adults to solve it.

𝐖𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐒𝐋𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐲𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞.

𝐖𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐲𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝.

Seeing the looks of wonder on the students as they went through this exercise, watching them comprehend the seriousness of the training and how they could apply the skills they were gaining, was truly rewarding.

We hear it so often, that it can become annoying, but it is a recurring theme for a reason.

Why are we told in schools and organizations to create a vision or goal with our peers, instead of setting our own goals and informing others about them?

𝐈𝐟 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐮𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞?

We recently conducted a session in a school and the final main task was to get the entire class to create their class vision using domino bricks.

They could work in small groups, but ultimately, their designs had to be combined to create a story and a domino effect.

Seems simple, right?

But what we observed was that students immediately formed little groups and started building their own designs.

𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭, 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐞𝐬.

So we quietly observed. Everyone was focused on their own narrow vision, ignoring the big picture.

We waited to see if they could create a class vision by combining their group designs.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐲.

How could they create a class vision by only working with a small segment of the class?

Then, the noise and discussions became more lively, and there was a genuine desire to create something as a class.

This transformation was special! Seeing our youth leaders realize they needed their peers to create a unifying vision for their class and appreciate each other for working as a team.

How about the last time you offered such sincere encouragement that it brought someone to tears of joy?

𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐠𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐥.

We recently ran a program at a girls' school for the Secondary 1 cohort. We noticed that while the girls got along, they didn’t actively practice encouraging each other's hearts.

They didn’t seem to understand why uplifting and supporting one another is important.

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤, 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐤𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐬 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐨 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭.

But is it?

Six months into their school term, cliques had formed, and there was a lack of unity within the class. There was no urgency to show appreciation to one another.

𝐒𝐨, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐨?

𝐖𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬:

1) First, verbally in a group setting.

2) Second, verbally in a pair-share method.

3) Finally, they wrote love letters to each other and then a consolidated love letter to their class.

The transformation was incredible. Initially, the students were uncomfortable expressing their appreciation, as our natural ego often prevents us from being vulnerable for fear of rejection.

But as we persevered, the walls came crumbling down, and the girls began sharing their love and appreciation for each other.

The brightness in their faces was like watching a sunrise. It was truly amazing.

𝐒𝐨, 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐫, 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐞, 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝, 𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫?

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥, 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐂𝐀 𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬?

But maybe, due to the culture, budgets, or lack of support, you had to make do with what you had?

𝐈𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭?

Recently, we had the privilege of running a cohort training with Secondary 2 students. Interestingly, the school grouped them by their CCAs instead of classes.

The goal?

To identify areas for improvement within their CCAs and empower the students to execute these changes.

Sounds exciting, right?

We provided a framework for brainstorming and taught them how to include and consider their stakeholders in the process.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭?

𝐀𝐦𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐂𝐂𝐀𝐬.

But was that all?

Great ideas are just the beginning. Students also need to know how to present and pitch their proposals effectively.

So, we equipped them with skills to deliver powerful pitches, enabling them to articulate their desired changes and benefits to all relevant stakeholders.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬.

More importantly, they realized how vital these skills will be as they transition into the workplace.

Hello friends!

We recently had an amazing day with our Secondary 3 cohort, combining classroom learning with hands-on activities to prepare our students for their future careers and teamwork.

𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐕𝐈𝐏𝐒 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥
Our students dived into the VIPS Model (Values, Interests, Personality, Skills) to explore their unique strengths and preferences. This interactive session helped them gain clarity on their career aspirations and post-secondary educational choices.

𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐕𝐈𝐀 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐬
Taking the learning outdoors, students engaged in a fun and insightful sandcastle-building exercise. Using their VIA Character Strengths, they discovered what drives them and how they can effectively collaborate as a team.

The blend of self-discovery and teamwork made the day truly special. Our students not only learned more about themselves but also saw how their strengths play out in real-world scenarios. We are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm and growth!

𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉 𝑰𝒏𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒉𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒂 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒑 𝒐𝒇 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒚 5 𝑺𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔.

The calibre of students was simply spectacular!

It was obvious how much they loved and enjoyed being leaders, and they were filled with such enthusiasm to learn more and satisfy their endless desire for more knowledge and skills!

𝑨𝒏𝒅 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒅𝒊𝒅!

Participants were equipped with essential skills on:

- Understanding each other using DISC in a simplified setting. While DISC may seem like a massive topic for primary students, these leaders were keen to learn about the different styles and could immediately see some of the traits within their peers. It was an eye-opening experience when they realized they could suddenly explain some of the behavioural traits they possessed.

- Enabling each other to work more effectively in teams, especially in their role as Leaders. It was reinforced to participants that their roles as leaders meant they had to take the initiative to offer help, provide support, and encourage participation amongst their peers.

Overall, it was an enriching afternoon spent with our leaders of tomorrow!

𝑩𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒂𝒏𝒅! 𝑶𝒏𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑭𝒂𝒗𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉𝒔!

Youth Inspired returned to East Coast Park for another fun day in the sun with a Secondary 1 Cohort to strengthen their bonds and make their transition into Secondary School easier.

Participants got to understand the value of diversity and the importance of working well with others through the various challenges presented to them.

Participants were tested on their abilities to design something aesthetically pleasing while still relating it to their class identity and vision!

𝑯𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒌𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒂 10 𝒕𝒐 12-𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓-𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒅? 𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝒅𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒓𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒌 𝒅𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒑𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎?

At Youth Inspired, we spent quite a fair bit of time thinking about the answer to this question.

While we have run leadership workshops for many years, we must keep trying to innovate and find new ways of running our sessions so that student engagement is high, and there is something they can bring back with some form of transformation.

What we have realized is that our youths today are much smarter than us (i.e. the trainers).

𝑶𝒖𝒓 𝒋𝒐𝒃 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒇𝒂𝒄𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒂𝒏 𝒊𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒈𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎 𝒕𝒐 𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒍𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒍𝒆𝒅𝒈𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒌𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒔 𝒈𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒅. 𝑻𝒐 𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒏 𝒖𝒑 𝒂 𝒅𝒐𝒐𝒓 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒖𝒔.

This is why we do what we do and we love every moment of it!

𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉 𝑰𝒏𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒅 𝒐𝒇𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉 𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒅𝒂𝒚𝒔 𝒃𝒚 𝒓𝒖𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏 𝒊𝒏-𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝑭𝒂𝒄𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑺𝒌𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒔 𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑭𝒂𝒄𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔.

The beauty of this session was that we had a mix of seasoned experts and fresh-faced beginners all pursuing knowledge and skills to enhance their Facilitation Techniques.

𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒐 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉 𝑰𝒏𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆:
- Effective Facilitation 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒔 𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 throughout our workshops and camps. Without it, trainers become content deliverers which does not promote any form of learning for our participants.
- Skilled facilitators can ensure that 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍𝒔 𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒍𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒅 during workshops/camps regardless of their expertise or personality.
- 𝑮𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒑 𝒅𝒚𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒄𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍 so that no single voice dominates a session, instead everyone feels heard and valued.

Ultimately, being skilled in Facilitation provides a memorable learning experience for the participant, and it will help them feel more motivated to apply the knowledge and skills gained during our workshops!
