Never mind the dotcom bubble burst in 2000, dotcom has carried on in our lives despite that stock market burst. Kids born after 2000 are born in the technology era. Since young, we were not too particular with the son's screen time. While handheld tablet wasn't quite a thing yet, he had laptop. Surprising to all, he was not keen in computer games, even to-date.

Maybe it was us who exposed him early to the screen, he was very comfortable with online learning. He was with Khan Academy, Stanford Online Education Program for Gifted Youth, etc. At 10, he was already learning Calculus, Python, etc. I have come to the belief that it is not about managing the screen time, it is about managing the screen time content that affects the child.

AJ, my son, has a gift of music. We identified that trait when he was 2, and he started his formal music training at 2.5 yo. He got his Diploma in Music Performance at 11.

I have a parenting blog which I documented his growth from young till he was 10. Just last week, I collated the topic on Music from my blog posts and put them into the knowledge base of Estha.AI. It took me an hour to collate my blog posts, it only took me a few minutes to launch this chatbot.

Just like roses, what appear glamorous to others, the route to the glam outlook was rough and prickly. If you are keen to know about his music journey, come, let's chat:

[Some Consideration Factors Selecting Higher Chinese or Normal Chinese]

Recently I saw on social media a celebrity mom posted a picture of Higher Chinese (HCL) textbook. She mentioned that her son was thrilled to take HCL in secondary school because one only needs 4 years of study as compared to taking Normal Chinese which needs 5 years.

I have to agree that the 4 short years stint is a big lure. As a parent, should you encourage your child to embark on this?

To put everything in perspective, secondary school students are offered HCL if the respective schools have this in their course curriculum. And schools will encourage students to take up, citing a shorter
study period (4 years vs 5 years for Normal Chinese), and the possibility of dropping it, reverting to Normal Chinese should one decide later.

Before a parent be enticed to take this route, consider these:

1) Were your child struggling with HCL in his primary school days?
2) Did you send him for tuition for this subject?
3) Has he been scoring below As in this subject (or merely a Pass in this subject in PSLE)?

If your answer has a majority of ‘Yes’, then the HCL might not be suitable for him. Let’s not deny the fact that we live in an environment that does not quite support Mandarin-speaking, in particular, our offspring. Unless you are a PRC or from Taiwan, our Chinese is generally
half-past-six. In this aspect, our children are already behind the starting line.

Who are the students who will definitely take HCL? They are usually the PRCs, who have a much stronger foundation in Chinese than our children. Singaporean parents with children taking HCL ended up sending their children to tuition, just to
ensure they can get a Pass or Distinction in PSLE.

When our children go into secondary school, they will be doing 8 subjects, double the number of subjects in primary school. Do we want our children to spend the bulk of their free time brushing up
on HCL, or would you prefer them to spend a good number of hours on subjects that matter more?

Ironically, the standard between Normal Chinese and Higher Chinese is vast. Higher Chinese is really not easy. On top of that, the proficiency level of the students taking Higher Chinese and Normal Chinese is of a wide spectrum.

So think very carefully when you help your child in subject selection. Do not just be lured into the shorter stint. I would rather have my child cruise with Normal Chinese over 5 years than struggle with Higher
Chinese over 4 years.

Having said that, if your child is already very proficient in HCL, please go ahead with HCL. China is the world second largest economy, whenever possible, we should do our best to prepare our children to integrate into this economic powerhouse. Above all, know your child’s ability is the most important consideration.

The growing trend of B1 (light-industry) Industrial Property is having a nicer and air-conditioned reception at ground floor lobby.

Although this is a Reit-managed property, it makes sense to invest in this Reit &/or managed-alike strata-titled industrial properties.

Understanding deposit insurance 12/03/2023

The fall of Silvergate & SVB have caused some people to fear that there will be a collapse in the US banking system. Some even think interest rates will be revised downward.

I doubt.

SVB is not a consumer bank, its majority clients are VCs & start-ups. The equity market might be jittery for a while, Fed might pause rate hike to contain the fear, only to raise the interest rate when market sentiment is more stable.

Just for info, our Singdollar deposit is safe up to S$75k per bank in SG. If you have idle cash, spread it across to other banks lah.

Understanding deposit insurance Deposit insurance guarantees the money in your bank up to $75,000 per bank per person. Find out more about Deposit Insurance Scheme and how your money is protected.
