A Reminder to Students: Teachers Are Human Too
Sometimes, students only see the authority figure standing in front of them.
The person who gives instructions.
The person who corrects them.
The person who creates discipline in the classroom, rehearsal room or training space.
But behind the title of “teacher,” “instructor” or “coach” is also a human being.
Yes, teaching is a job. We have responsibilities, job descriptions, deadlines and salaries. We are expected to show up, manage the class, deliver lessons and help students improve.
But we also have families to return to.
We have bills to pay.
We have parents, spouses and children to care for.
Sometimes, we are dealing with personal struggles that nobody in the classroom knows about.
Yet when we step into the classroom, we try our best not to place those burdens on our students.
We continue teaching.
We continue guiding.
We continue correcting.
We continue believing in our students, even on days when we ourselves may be struggling.
Teachers are not perfect. We make mistakes too. Sometimes, we may say the wrong thing, misunderstand a situation or fail to notice what a student is going through.
But most teachers do not enter a classroom thinking, “How can I make life difficult for my students today?”
Discipline is not always punishment. Sometimes, it is preparation.
Correction is not always rejection. Sometimes, it is because someone believes you can do better.
So before judging a teacher or coach too quickly, remember this:
The person standing in front of you may also be carrying invisible baggage, but still chooses to show up and carry the responsibility of helping you grow.
You do not have to agree with every teacher.
But a little respect, patience and understanding can go both ways.
Teachers are human too.
