Why do good students still lose marks in Science exams?

Many students understand the topic, but their written answers are not exam-ready.

In Singapore Science exams, marks are often lost because the answer is:

Too vague
Missing key scientific terms
Not linked to the question
Missing cause-and-effect explanation
Written like a memorised answer instead of an applied answer

For example, a student may know the concept of heat transfer, but still lose marks if they do not mention important ideas like conductor, heat transfer and from hotter to cooler region.

Many students think A-Math is simply a harder version of E-Math. But the real difference is the thinking style.

E-Math often focuses on applying familiar methods accurately. Students learn a formula or technique, recognise the question type, and follow clear steps.

A-Math requires more abstract thinking. Students need stronger algebra skills, better problem-solving flexibility, and the ability to decide which method to use when the question does not look familiar.

That is why some students who do well in E-Math may still struggle with A-Math at first.
