🚨 The End of Frictionless Global E-Commerce? 🚨

For decades, de minimis exemptions such as Section 321 in the United States and similar low-value import thresholds in Europe allowed small-value goods to cross borders with minimal customs intervention. What was once a little-known customs provision has now become a major focus of trade policy as governments respond to the explosive growth of cross-border e-commerce. With billions of low-value packages entering global markets each year, customs authorities are increasing enforcement, tightening regulations, and proposing reforms aimed at improving border security, collecting revenue, and addressing concerns over unfair competition, counterfeit goods, and compliance risks.

The impact is being felt across the entire trade ecosystem. Customs brokers, logistics providers, retailers, and importers are facing higher compliance requirements, greater data scrutiny, and rising operational costs. At the same time, companies are redesigning supply chains, investing in automation and trade intelligence, and exploring alternative fulfillment strategies to remain competitive. As regulators continue to reshape the rules governing low-value imports, the era of frictionless, ultra-cheap cross-border e-commerce may be coming to an end, ushering in a new chapter for global trade.
