Discovering Singapore's Heritage Through Wall Murals

Over the past two weeks, our morning walks became a journey through time as the children explored the heritage wall murals from Telok Ayer Street, through the basement walkway of ICON Link @ ClubStreet, and into Chinatown. More than colourful works of art, these murals became windows into Singapore's past, helping the children imagine what life was like for our forefathers.

As we explored the streets, the children made meaningful comparisons between old and modern Singapore. They discovered traditional shophouses, wooden louvre windows, roadside cobblers and barbers, lively wayang performances, and simple family homes, while recognising how Singapore has transformed over the years.

Our conversations encouraged the children to appreciate Singapore's history, culture, and heritage. Some excitedly shared that they had seen—or even still have—some of these traditional household items at home, making history feel real and relatable.

We were especially delighted to capture these precious moments with the heritage murals, many of which were painted by renowned local mural artist, Yip Yew Chong. His artwork preserves the everyday stories of old Singapore and reminds us of the importance of remembering where we came from.

Being located in the heart of Singapore's heritage district allows our children to experience history beyond books. These murals have become outdoor classrooms where observation, conversation, imagination, and discovery bring learning to life.

29 July 2026 | Saying "Thank You"...

On our walk back to school after enjoying the Singapore Symphony Orchestra's lunchtime performance, our children noticed two uncles cleaning the Singapore River. It became a meaningful teachable moment.

We paused to observe the important work they were doing to keep our river and city clean. One child asked, “Why is the river so dirty?”

Together, we spoke about how every job contributes to our community and how these everyday heroes help make Singapore a cleaner and more beautiful place for everyone.

Glad that our children have the opportunity (again) to learn to say "Thank You" and show appreciation to our everyday heroes.

🎻 29 July 2026 | A Musical Journey with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra 🎼

A memorable lunchtime for our K1 and K2 children! We were delighted to secure complimentary seats for the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) Lunchtime Performance at the beautiful Victoria Concert Hall. For many of our children, this was their very first experience attending a live orchestra concert.

Nothing compares to hearing live music performed in a world-class concert hall. As the orchestra filled the hall with beautiful music, the children experienced the richness, depth, and power of live instrumental performances—an experience that simply cannot be replicated through a screen or speaker. Beyond enjoying the music, the children learnt about the different musical instruments in an orchestra, observed how musicians work together as one ensemble, and discovered the important role of the conductor in leading and coordinating the performance. It was a meaningful opportunity to build their awareness and appreciation of music, teamwork, and the performing arts.

A big well done to our K1 and K2 children! 👏 They tried their very best to remain attentive throughout the one-hour performance, demonstrating wonderful self-regulation, respect for performers, and concert etiquette. After the concert, they even walked all the way back to school before enjoying their well-deserved late lunch!

A heartfelt thank you to the Singapore Symphony Orchestra for making live orchestral music accessible to young audiences.

21 July 2026 – Racial Harmony Day Celebration

Racial Harmony Day is an important celebration that helps instil in children, from a young age, the values of respect, appreciation, and inclusivity in a multicultural society. Through meaningful experiences and discussions, the children learnt that every community has its own unique identity, traditions, beliefs, and practices. By celebrating our similarities and differences, we nurture children to value diversity, build friendships across cultures, and develop a sense of belonging and respect for everyone.

The learning journey to the National Gallery Singapore provided the children with an authentic and enriching out-of-centre learning experience. ❤️

At the "When Art Meets Nature" exhibition by Soh Ee Shaun, the children discovered how artists use colours, shapes, and textures to express ideas inspired by nature. Together, we explored how a single colour can have many different shades and talked about how the children will have opportunities to experiment with creating these shades back in school. The children also observed the artworks closely, identifying familiar shapes and natural elements they have been learning about in class.

Beyond the exhibition, we explored other areas of the National Gallery, and it was wonderful to see the children's curiosity, excitement, and eagerness to learn throughout the visit. We look forward to returning during future morning walks to discover even more!

One of the highlights of the day was our "little" walk back to school along the Singapore River. Along the way, we introduced the children to a little of Singapore's history and pointed out familiar landmarks such as the Singapore River, Cavenagh Bridge, and the Fullerton Building, which was once Singapore's General Post Office. It was a meaningful way to begin exploring the story of our Little Red Dot as we look forward to celebrating National Day in August.

It was truly an awesome day of exploration, discovery, and shared learning. Thank you to all our supportive parents for believing in the value of outdoor learning and for partnering with us to provide these rich and meaningful experiences for our children.

19 June 2026 – Emergency Evacuation Exercise (EEE)

That Friday was a fulfilling and eventful day for everyone in school. Besides preparing our distribution of Father’s Day gifts done the week before, and enjoying the Dragon Boat Festival cultural activities, we also participated in our Building Emergency Evacuation Exercise (EEE).

Our planned activities continued as usual, while keeping in mind that emergencies can happen at any time and without warning. Through the Exercise, the children and teachers learned that upon hearing the first alarm, we should prepare ourselves for a possible evacuation and wait calmly for further instructions. Only when the second alarm sounds and instructions are given, do we evacuate in an orderly and safe manner.

After the Exercise, one of our K1 children asked, “Why are the other children wearing shoes?” We were delighted by this thoughtful observation. It demonstrated the child’s curiosity, critical thinking, and confidence to ask questions openly.

The question sparked a meaningful discussion among the children. Together, we reflected on the purpose of emergency evacuations (again) and considered whether wearing shoes during an EEE would help keep us safe. Through this conversation, the children were encouraged to think, share their ideas, and arrive at their own conclusions about the importance of being prepared and staying safe during emergencies.

This simple question became a valuable learning opportunity, reminding us that children’s observations and inquiries often lead to meaningful discussions and deeper understanding.

19 June 2026 - Dragonboat Festival

A day of Chinese Cultural Awareness Event for our children.

We explored the origins and significance of the Dragon Boat Festival, while immersing the children in a sensory experience of smelling, touching, and tasting traditional rice dumplings. They also had the opportunity to become little “MasterChefs” by creating their own glutinous rice dumplings.

In a fun and innovative way, the children took on the roles of drummers and dragon boat racers, experiencing the excitement of this traditional sport. Who knows—perhaps one of them may become a real dragon boat racer in the future!

Through stories, sensory exploration, and imaginative play, the children developed an appreciation of this cherished cultural festival while creating joyful memories together.
