Through experiential activities and practical discussions, managers gained deeper insights into how can reduce inefficiencies, improve alignment, and lighten workloads across teams. Participants also learned strategies to influence stakeholders more effectively by understanding different priorities, communication styles, and working approaches.

The programme showed strong measurable improvements. Understanding of cross-functional team dynamics increased by 22%, while confidence in collaborating across functions improved by 22%. The ability to influence and manage stakeholders also rose by 22%, and awareness of how to share and lighten team workload effectively increased by 23%.

Strengthening Functional Manager Roles at Decathlon Singapore – Day 1

Day 1 of the Strengthening Functional Manager Role through programme, led by Dr Jace Tan, focused on one critical foundation: .

Functional Managers at Decathlon Singapore embarked on a structured learning journey to better understand their and how these influence the way they communicate, make decisions, and collaborate with others.

Through a series of guided reflections, and experiential activities, participants gained deeper insights into their natural working styles. More importantly, they began to recognise how differences in personality can either create friction or drive stronger when understood and managed effectively.

The impact was clear.

Managers reported a 21% increase in understanding their own personality traits, while awareness of how personality affects communication rose by 22%. Their ability to recognise different working styles improved by 23%, and confidence in working with diverse personalities increased by 22%.

Beyond the numbers, the shift in mindset stood out. Managers became more intentional in how they approach team dynamics, moving away from assumptions towards greater awareness and adaptability.

Day 1 sets a strong foundation for Functional Managers to lead with clarity and purpose. With heightened self-awareness, they are now better equipped to build stronger relationships and more effective teams as they progress into the next phase of the programme.

JCU 2026 - Student Marketeer Leadership Training 16/04/2026

How do you measure in just 1 session?

On 4 April 2026, I worked with Student Marketeers from James Cook University and the results were clear.

At the start:
Self-understanding: 53.3%
Understanding of team mates: 37.8%

Just a few hours later:
Self-understanding: 88.9% (+35.6%)
Team understanding: 88.9% (+51.1%)

The biggest shift?
A 35.6% increase in
A 51% increase in

And that’s the real game changer.

Most leadership programmes focus on skills.

But leadership breaks down not because of skills.
It breaks down because people don’t understand each other.

What made the difference?

We combined:
1. Behavioural insights ( )
2. Structured reflection
3. AI-assisted interpretation

AI wasn’t used to replace thinking.
It was used to accelerate clarity.

88.9% rated AI accuracy ≥ 8/10
66.7% rated AI usefulness ≥ 8/10

The outcome?
1. Stronger self-awareness
2. Clearer understanding of team dynamics
3. Practical ways to communicate and collaborate

And most importantly:
100% of participants rated the session 8/10 or higher

Final thought:
Leadership is not about being the smartest person in the room.

It’s about:
i. Understanding yourself
ii. Understanding others

And knowing how to bridge the gap.

When you get this right, performance is no longer forced, it becomes natural.

Thank you to James Khong for the introduction. Charlotte Chia for the opportunity. Hazirah Halim for the wonderful support and coordination and the rest of the participants like Rovie Antoinet Obiña.
