It was a privilege to host Tom Leighton, CEO of Akamai Technologies, at the new Singapore Institute of Technology campus in Punggol earlier this week.
Tom’s insightful and engaging lecture was truly inspiring, particularly for our first-year Computing Science students from the University of Glasgow–SIT programme. His perspectives on innovation, technology, and leadership provided valuable lessons for the next generation of computing professionals.
My sincere thanks to the SIT, University of Glasgow Singapore (UGS) and Akamai Technologies Singapore teams for making this wonderful event possible.

🏆✨ From SIT-UofG to National Champion: Jauza Wins IMechE Speak Out for Engineering ✨🏆
We are delighted and very proud to share that Jauza, a member of our SIT-UofG Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Student Chapter and a student from the SIT-UofG joint degree in Mechanical Engineering (MEC), has been crowned Champion of the national IMechE Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) Competition.
This outstanding achievement reflects her dedication, confidence, and presentation skills as well as the guidance and unwavering support provided by our lecturers, the MEC programme and the IMechE Student Chapter community at SIT-UofG. Through encouragement, coaching, and opportunities for professional development, Jauza first emerged as Champion of the SIT-UofG Presenter of the Future (POTF) competition in Nov 2025, which earned her the opportunity to represent SIT-UofG at the national-level SOfE competition. This accomplishment also highlights the important role of the Student Chapter in nurturing students’ communication, leadership, and professional skills beyond the classroom.
🎉Congratulations once again to Jauza and our IMechE Student Chapter on this remarkable achievement. Well done!

✨ You Belong Here: Inspiring Future Women Engineers ✨
Dr. Jolly Atit Shah, Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Glasgow, Singapore, recently delivered a Women in Engineering Discovery Workshop at Global Indian International School (GIIS), Singapore for students in Grades 8–11.
The workshop introduced students to the University of Glasgow’s engineering programmes in Singapore and Glasgow, while reinforcing an important message:
💡Engineering is not about perfection — it is about creativity, resilience, and problem-solving.
Through an inspiring talk on breaking stereotypes and the importance of diversity in STEM, Dr. Shah encouraged participants to see engineering as an inclusive and impactful career path.
👩🔬👩💻Students then engaged in hands-on team challenges, including engineering puzzles and a LEGO car design-and-race competition. The activity allowed them to prototype, test, refine, and experience the iterative nature of engineering design.
🤝The session was supported by Year 2 Mechanical Engineering student volunteers Cheng Xi and Chen Kaiting, whose mentorship provided valuable peer inspiration. 🌟Special thanks also to Sophia Lee for coordinating with the school.
🚀This initiative reflects the University of Glasgow’s continued commitment to widening participation and inspiring the next generation of innovative, diverse engineers.
