29 out of 30. On paper, that's a score most parents would be thrilled with - and most tutors would just say "well done" and leave it there.

Hannah felt the same. She was happy, sent a heart, and then added the honest bit herself: "Careless mistake I forgot to further factorise."

That's the part we didn't skip past. Even one mark off full marks, we still talked about what went wrong. "Aiyo. ok now painful lesson. u will remember to always check whether need to further factorise." Not to make her feel bad about a great score - but because that's the habit that decides whether the next paper is 29 or 30.

Right after, "good job =D" - because the effort was real and it deserved to be said just as clearly as the correction.

This is what peace of mind looks like day to day. Not miracles, not drama. Just checking the one mark nobody else would bother checking, so the next paper doesn't repeat it. Hannah even messaged back later asking what school was covering next, so lessons stay on track - that's a student who's stopped waiting to be told. 💛

When x and y disappear, it does not always mean you made a mistake. For simultaneous equations, check the special cases: parallel lines have no solution, while the same line has infinite solutions — F9 to A1 is possible 💪

Joshua joined me in Sec 3, struggling with AMath. I told him I wanted to vomit blood after seeing his paper - he still remembers that. So we slowed down and broke every question apart by type, not by luck. Method first, speed later. He got his A1 in 2018.

Eight years later, he came back - not for help, just to say thank you and do this testimonial. Turns out he graduated valedictorian, Economics degree, and now he's building a real estate business in Brisbane. Same thinking, he said. Break it down, don't guess.

You never know which lesson follows a child into adulthood. This one reminded me - it's never just the grade. 💪

17/20 on her WA1. A good score. But 3 of those marks weren't lost to a gap in understanding - they were lost to carelessness. That's a different problem, and it needed a different fix.

So instead of telling Yuh Qing exactly where she went wrong, I gave her the homework of finding out herself. "Later after lesson u type out the 3 marks loss info here," I told her.

I didn't chase her for it. She sent it in that same night, at 22:13 - well after the lesson had ended. And she'd found all three, precisely: she wrote her answer to 2 decimal places when it needed 3 significant figures, she thought -5/4 was bigger than -5/8, and she forgot to flip the sign when moving +120 across the equation.

No vague "I'll be more careful." She named the exact traps.

"Okok, next time take note of these mistakes and u can get ur full marks le," I told her. Because once a student can point to her own careless slips instead of just being told about them, "be more careful" stops being empty advice. It becomes something she knows exactly how to do.

35/40 for E Math. 36/40 for A Math. Good scores by any measure. Most parents would stop right there with a "well done" and move on.

I didn't.

I asked Kai Ze where the other marks went. Not to scold him - to make him look. "U tell me," I said, "cos I want you to remember where are the mistakes and how you can prevent it next time."

He didn't shrug it off. He came back with it clearly: 1 mark lost on sets, 4 marks lost to careless algebra slips in E Math. In A Math, 4 marks gone because he didn't spot that a trigo equation needed factorisation as the next step.

That's the part that matters to me. Not that he scored well - plenty of students score well once and forget why by the next paper. What matters is that he can name his own mistake, in his own words, without me pointing it out first.

"Okok. Be careful next time. And now u will remember them and next time know how," I told him. Because once a student can see exactly where the marks went, "be careful" isn't just a warning anymore. It's something he actually knows how to do.
