Today, I'm super super happy for 3 students who got their A level results that I just have to detail it out here.
While students scoring many As are a cause for celebration and showcasing, these three students did not score all As, but achieve massive improvement to their results, by virtue of their dedication and hard work.
My happiness came from having witnessed all 3 of them putting in the extreme levels of hard work to finally achieve what they set out to achieve when they first join me.
Student 1, a private candidate cuz too slow to reapply back to JC after 2022 A level.
She worked part time at a restaurant, and used some of the part time money pay for tuition. Followed my advice to the dot, finished almost 3 years of all JC prelim papers for Maths Physics and Chemistry (2021 ~ 2023). Finished entire TYS, both topical and yearly. All done in about 6 months.
She went from a D grade for Maths and Physics to a B grade. Overall rank points increased and qualified for engineering. Confidence level shot up massively.
Student 2, a student who was on the verged of giving up Physics.
Again, very hardworking, did all the work plus more. In about 8 months or less, went from U grade to C. It wasn't easy but she did it. It was a lot of work to catch up all the J1 concepts.
Student 3, also did badly for 2022 A level, and could not qualify for any university with mainly S for grades. Repeated J2. Worked really hard through all the J1 stuff to J2 stuff, attending both J1 and J2 lessons (I didn't charge extra for it). Extreme levels of hard work and dedication.
Finished 2023 A levels with A and Bs, and qualify for the uni course he wanted.
These are the type of students why I'm still in this line of work.

"Hey Ryan, my girl scored 43 out of 100 for her mid year examination, I am so worried for her." said V's mum on our first meeting.
Looking earnestly at the parent, I asked, "Mdm, with your permission, may I have a conversation on Zoom with your girl?"
During the call, I could hear V's exasperation, her repeated sighs, her "I'm trying to hold everything together but everything's falling apart" sniffle. We did not talk anything about ways to improve, or which strategies to deploy to jumpstart her results, none of those matter during that moment.
When she had calmed down, I reassured her that the Zoom meeting room is a safe space and I asked her if it's all right for me to share my story growing up.
"Hey V, huge thanks for allowing me to share a quick story with you. I was on the verge of dropping out of school back in college, but my homeroom teacher held on to me tightly. He coached me personally every day after school till late night. I forgot most of the stuff he taught me, but I hold on to the three lines he said to me every day."
"What are the three lines?" asked V.
"I will never give up on you."
"I will always believe in you."
"I will work hard with you."
I said gently, holding back my tears, as if I'm telling it to myself again.
V looked at the we**am and smiled.
3 months later, I received a text from V.
It was her preliminary exam result.
And for this reason, I like to see every child as a 0-1, with the possibility of attaining 1 far greater than 0. I'm rooting for you, V!

Another S4 student improved to an A1 for MYE 2022!
Of course, this requires hard work from both the student and the tutor :)
No secrets, no fluff, no special memory techniques. Just strong foundation building of Physics concepts with meticulously crafted materials by our Physics specialist who holds multiple awards.
Some strategies used to build students' concepts include positive examples, negative examples, common conceptual pitfalls, chaining multiple concepts across chapters, etc.

What exactly are heuristics and how could it be applied in primary school mathematics?
Here's an article by our Primary school specialist Ryan, which shows a worked example of how it may be applied to a primary mathematics question.

Woo! One of the more interesting Kinematics questions from the O level 2021 Physics MCQ below, vs questions from our worksheets!
And of course! Eton's Pure Physics students managed to benefit :)
Calls for a celebration!
Here's the technical thinking process behind setting these questions for those still reading:
In general, kinematics has 5 different variables and questions are generally set with 3 variables in mind. From there, we have 15 potential combinations. Some are too tough for O Level students but at least 10 are still well within the capabilities of most.
Practice makes perfect
But you have to practice the correct questions for that "perfect" :)
Congratulations all Pure Physics students for completing O Level Physics 2021. And good luck for your Chemistry Paper tomorrow!
