NIEC is the national institute set up by MOE and serves as the home to all early childhood educators by delivering quality training at every stage of their career. The National Institute of Early Childhood Development (NIEC), a national training institute set up by the Ministry of Education, provides quality training and professional development for Singapore’s EC (early childhood) educators at ev

ery stage of their career. Through our training courses delivered by our stellar lecturers, we develop EC educators who exemplify the attributes of NIEC’s Desired Graduate Profile: Reflective Practitioner, Relationship Builder, and Resilient Learner. Under the 'One NIEC, Four Campuses' model, our EC courses are offered at: NIEC City Campus, NIEC Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) Campus, NIEC Temasek Polytechnic (TP) Campus, and NIEC Institute of Technical Education (ITE) Campus. Since opening our doors in 2019, we have been collaborating closely with our key partners, the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) and the Ministry of Education (MOE), to raise the standard of preschool educator training in Singapore. We strive to ensure that the content in our various EC courses reflects the latest industry practices, is practice-oriented, and caters to a myriad learners at different stages of their EC journey. When children know how to seek help, they are more likely to receive timely protection and support, especially when it matters most.

Self-protection is a critical part of every child's early development. By building a deeper understanding of what body safety means for children, educators can better provide the support that children need. Over the years, Singapore’s early childhood sector has grown not only in scale, but also in the professionalisation of its workforce. As the sector has evolved, so too have the knowledge, competencies and professional standards expected of early childhood educators — with training playing an important role in preparing educators to meet the increasingly diverse needs of children and families. In this documentary, explore how the early childhood landscape has developed over the years, shaped in collaboration by the hands of educators, sector leaders, parents, and policymakers.

At the heart of this progress is the preparation of educators who are equipped to meet the evolving needs of children and families. As the sector continues to progress, we recognise the importance of nurturing the talent of those who shape the lives of the little ones. Hear from NIEC's Director and CEO, Ms Geraldine See, on the crucial role that teacher training plays in the sector, and why it is critical that NIEC equips educators with foundations in child development and pedagogy, alongside key competencies such as communication and parent engagement, and prepares them for increasingly diverse career pathways.

On 25 August, NIEC had the privilege of hosting Mr Goh Pei Ming, Senior Minister of State (SMS) for Social and Family Development, at NIEC's new headquarters and ExCEL@NIEC.

Through lesson observations and engagements with our students and staff, SMS Goh gained a first-hand look into how NIEC, as the Home for All Early Childhood Educators, supports educators at every stage of their professional journey - through authentic learning experiences, industry-relevant training and professional development opportunities that equip them to thrive in the sector.

If children refuse to sit still in the classroom, does that mean they are naughty, or that the activity is not enjoyable?

At our recent Naptime Webinar “Supporting Educators to Thrive and Grow Professionally in Inclusive Practice”, Ms Fiona Leow, NIEC Curriculum Specialist shared that these assumptions may not always be right. When children have limited ways of expressing themselves, they can turn to actions as a form of communication. It’s important to take a step back from making a subjective judgement, and break down what children may be trying to express through their behaviour. Recognising behaviour as communication and taking time to process incidents in the classroom can help educators reframe, reflect, and grow.

Joined by guest speaker Dr Abhirami Prakash, Assistant Director (InSP) from Early Intervention Services at the Community Psychology Hub, the session explored practical tips that benefit both educator wellbeing and inclusivity in your centre.

At the "Think in Tamil! Read in Tamil! 2026" event, NIEC (NP) student Ashvin Ganesan won first prize, demonstrating language proficiency with the news translation tasks.

The event was organised by Mediacorp Tamil News and Current Affairs team, the Ministry of Digital Development and Information's National Translation Committee, and supported by the Singapore Tamil Teachers' Union. About 100 students from secondary and tertiary education institutions participated, putting their translation skills to the test.

As the only diploma in Singapore with a bilingual Tamil and English curriculum, NIEC's Diploma in Tamil Studies with Early Education (TSE) trains our students to be early childhood educators proficient in Tamil history, literature, and culture, equipping them with the skills to build the foundation for Tamil Language and Literacy in children from their early years.
