August gave us plenty of the things you’d expect to see at Imagine If: play, lots of conversations, focused work, and plenty of moments in between.

Because a good learning month doesn’t have to follow the same recipe every time. Sometimes children need to get stuck into something, or they need to slow down and concentrate, or even that they need a change of scenery — or a game.

Here’s a little look back at August! 🌞

A brook meanders because it is responding to the landscape around it. A ditch has one very clear job: get from here to there.

Learn this. Answer that. Move on to the next subject.

Of course, structure has its place. But when every path is already decided for children, we can end up valuing them just for how well they follow the route rather than how well they can find one of their own.

At Imagine If, we try to leave some room for the meandering. Because the interesting bit is precisely where the child wanders off the path. 🌊

A lot of childhood happens in the in-between. 💫

The few minutes before an activity starts. The conversation that goes slightly off-topic. The random idea someone decides to explore. The moment where a child notices something and everyone else gets pulled into it.

These moments are easy to overlook because they don’t always look like traditional learning.

But they’re often where children practise some of the things that matter most — communicating their thoughts, making decisions, negotiating with others, and following their own curiosity.

So, here’s our occasional reminder that sometimes, the learning is in what happens along the way.

“Adults naturally prefer predictability. It’s not necessarily a character failing. Teachers need classrooms that can function. Parents need mornings where everyone actually leaves the house. But children aren’t designed to make systems run smoothly, nor should that always be the point.

They're in the middle of developing the capacity to do so, which looks different from actually having it, and a lot of what reads as inconvenient behaviour is happening precisely in that gap.

The question isn't whether we should expect anything of children. It's whether what we expect of them is actually teaching them something, or just making them easier to be around.”

When children seem unmotivated, our first instinct is often to ask: “How do we get them to try harder?” 💭

But sometimes the better question is: “What’s making this feel worth trying in the first place?”

Motivation doesn’t appear simply because we add more pressure, reminders, or rewards. Children are much more likely to put in effort when they feel capable, understand why something matters, and can see a connection between what they’re doing and something meaningful to them.

Unfiltered Parenting explores why motivation isn’t about pushing children harder — it’s about creating the conditions where they actually want to engage. Available for purchase: https://elementum.asia/product/earn-about-parenting-unfiltered-parenting-in-60-minutes

Some things are much easier (and sometimes, more fun) when you do them together, aren’t they? 👫🏻

Whether it’s building something, solving a problem, or figuring out the best way to complete a challenge, teamwork gives our learners the chance to practise things that don’t always show up on a worksheet. They also raise these questions:

How do we share ideas?
How do we handle different opinions?
How do we keep going when someone’s idea doesn’t work?

At Imagine If, we value these everyday opportunities because learning isn’t only about what children know. It’s also about how they work with others along the way. 🤝⚽️

A heartfelt thank you to this parent for sharing these kind words with us! ✨

Every child’s journey looks different, and progress doesn’t always happen in one big leap. Often, it’s built through many small moments — a child communicating a little more, trying something independently, joining others, or becoming more confident in their own abilities.

Seeing this learner grow into a more engaged and independent learner has been such a privilege. We’re grateful to have been part of his story, and thankful for the trust his family placed in us along the way. 🌷

Mainstream schooling often divides learning into neat categories. 📦

Math goes here. Science goes there. Language somewhere else. And while subjects can be useful ways to organise knowledge, real life rarely works that way.

A child building something might be using maths, problem-solving, creativity, and persistence all at once. A conversation about animals might lead into biology, research skills, and storytelling.

And so the boundaries become much less obvious.

At Imagine If, we value learning that reflects how the world actually works — messy and full of unexpected links. Because knowledge is much more useful when children understand how ideas fit together, not just where they belong on a timetable.

For National Day, we celebrated something a little closer to home. Not just the place we all share, but the people who make it what it is. 🇸🇬

At Imagine If, that meant celebrating our learners: their personalities, their little quirks, and the things that make them completely themselves.

Because a community isn’t built by everyone being the same, it’s built when different people have space to contribute in their own ways.

These little keepsakes were our way of celebrating what makes each learner unique. What better way to celebrate the diversity that makes Singapore home than with this? 🤍

One of the hardest parts of parenting is knowing how to respond when our children make mistakes.

Because when something goes wrong, it’s easy to jump straight into correction.

And sometimes, children do need guidance. But accountability doesn’t grow very well when a child is too busy feeling ashamed or defensive to actually reflect on what happened.

So, the goal isn’t to make children feel bad about their mistakes. It’s to help them understand their impact, take responsibility, and figure out what they can do differently next time.

In Unfiltered Parenting, we explore how to build accountability without damaging the connection that helps children learn in the first place. Available here: https://elementum.asia/product/earn-about-parenting-unfiltered-parenting-in-60-minutes
