What I wish I knew before signing up for online teaching portals

I've bounced between a handful of these platforms over the past couple of years, and a few patterns keep showing up.

1. Vetting = credibility. If a portal lets you "become a tutor" in five minutes with no interview, no demo lesson, and no ID check, that tells you something about who else is on the platform — and who your students are being pulled from. Platforms like VIPKid (background checks, demo lessons, degree verification) and Preply (interview-style screening) take longer to onboard you, but that friction is doing work: it keeps the platform's reputation, and your pay, more stable. Compare that to something like Cambly, where approval is near-instant. Easier to get in, but also easier for it to feel like a race to the bottom on rates. More diligence upfront usually means more credibility downstream.

2. Don't just chase the headline rate. A platform paying $5/hr more but giving you zero materials isn't automatically the better deal. If you're spending an extra hour prepping lessons for every two hours you teach, your effective hourly rate just tanked. Portals with supplied curricula or lesson banks (some of the K-12 English platforms like Qkids or SayABC do this) save you real time. Do the math on total time invested, not just the number on the pay page.

3. Don't over-commit early. Pick up a light load — a few hours a month — with a new portal before you build your schedule around it. Watch two things closely: do they pay on time, and do they pay the amount they promised (currency conversion and platform fees can quietly eat into this). Only once you've seen a couple of clean payment cycles should you start increasing your hours. It's a lot easier to walk away from a platform you've barely invested in than one you've built your whole week around.
