Last month, STAR Artists-in-Residence Ng Hui Hsien, The Observatory, and Zarina Muhammad gathered at the Esplanade Annexe Studio to present a year of research developed in dialogue with scientists from the ๐ก๐ง๐จ Earth Observatory of Singapore. Spanning a spectrum of media and formats, their creative propositions traversed deep-time processes of land formation, secret signals of volcanic activity, submerged marine ecologies, and the ecological knowledge of the Orang Laut, revealing how powerful inspirations can emerge from the encounter between artistic and scientific inquiry.
We are deeply grateful to the artists for animating this journey with experimental curiosity and sensorial resonances. We hope these ideas and relationships will reverberate through many works to come. Our gratitude extends to all our collaborators who joined us on this path and to the ecologies, planetary processes, and elemental forces that sustain our existence.

Food security has been a perennial concern in Singapore, which sees the nation-state importing more than 90% of its food and allocating only 1% of its land to agriculture. These challenges are intensified by disruptions to global supply chains due to climate-induced extreme weather. In response, Singapore Food Agency has implemented strategies to address national food security concerns, including the promotion of local urban agriculture. Edible Garden City, an urban farming social enterprise, has been a lead to expanding the country's urban agricultural landscape. Having established over 280 edible gardens, EGC is committed to regenerative agriculture and soil-based food systems as foundational to cultivating food sovereignty and fostering community agrarian literacy.
Join us on Saturday, 2 May at Edible Garden Cityโs site in Queenstown to learn about the importance of local soil-based food systems with a lecture by EGC Co-Founder ๐๐ท๐ผ๐ฟ๐ป ๐๐ผ๐, followed by a hands-on soil composting workshop with members of the EGC Queenstown community.

Coastal ecosystems and communities across islands such as Bintan and Singapore face existential threats of climate change-induced sea level rise and ocean warming. Industrial development adds to these pressures that expose coastal communities to significant risks to resources and livelihood, and the loss of maritime and cultural knowledge. Introducing an on-going digital humanities project, the Repository on Coastal Ecosystems: Bridging Artistic, Scientific and Community-led practices in the Riau Archipelago, was developed under the Climate Transformation Programme. Drawing from the long-term engagement in Bintan, the project explores how such digital tools support the documentation of mangrove restoration and coral
transplantation, and the circulation of coastal knowledge for a wider range of stakeholders. Referencing various onsite collaborations with community practitioners, researchers, and institutions in both Singapore and Indonesia, Professor ๐จ๐๐ฒ ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐ฎ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ and Research Fellow ๐๐ผ๐๐ต๐๐ฎ ๐๐ฒ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐, Climate Transformation Programme reflect on such platforms. Respondent Dr ๐ข๐ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ซ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ด, St Johnโs Island National Marine Laboratory, NUS, shares her scientific engagements with partners and communities in the region. Join us for the launch of ๐๐ค๐ข๐ ๐๐ค๐ฃ๐ค๐ก๐ค๐๐ช๐๐จ (Wendyโs Subway, 2025), a publication by our former Artist-in-Residence ๐ง๐๐น๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ผ๐ฏ๐๐ฟ๐ป gathering fifteen years of the artistโs scripts!
On this occasion, Coburn presents a new monologue entitled ๐๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ญ๐ฆ inspired by ๐ ๐๐ฆ๐ณ๐ด๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ข๐ญ ๐๐ช๐ด๐ต๐ฐ๐ณ๐บ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ช๐ค๐ข๐ฏ ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ข๐ต๐ณ๐ฆ (1980), a one-person performance by the American actor and writer Spalding Gray (1941โ2004). Moving through a set of index cards bearing the names of plays he acted in, Gray told stories related to those productions, dwelling on events unfolding behind the scenes. As the order of the index cards was random, no two performances were ever the same. In Coburnโs version, each of his cards indicates the name of a person who has a role in the book: an academic he interviewed for a project, an amorous attendee to one of his monologues, his collaborator Susan Bennett (the original voice actress of Siri), a data center employee who insulted him, and more. ๐๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ญ๐ฆ brings focus to his many collaborators and the monologues they helped create.
The performance will be followed by a conversation between ๐ง๐๐น๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ผ๐ฏ๐๐ฟ๐ป and artist/writer ๐๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ป ๐ช๐ฒ๐ฒ.

In 2000, scholars Paul Crutzen and Eugene Stoermer proposed the formal recognition of a new โAnthropoceneโ epoch, a geological era defined by profound human modification of the global environment. How might we understand this epoch through transformations of the Earthโs surfacesโโthe erosion of coastlines, the clearing of forests, or the accumulation of plastic along ocean horizons? What are the signatures of the โAnthropoceneโ and how can they be measured? Through material residues, Artist, Curator and Educator ๐ช๐ฎ๐ป๐ด ๐ฅ๐๐ผ๐ฏ๐ถ๐ป๐ด (LASALLE College of the Arts) creates physical records of discarded objects that wash ashore along Singaporeโs coastlines. Associate Professor ๐๐ฑ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ธ (NIE and ASE, NTU) examines the impacts of sand mining and natural disasters at a geographical scale, tracing changing riverscapes and landscapes through remote sensing technologies and GIS modelling. Moderated by archaeologist ๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฎ ๐๐ผ๐น๐ฒ, this lecture explores how surfaces of the earth are being radically altered by climate change and human activity and asks how we document and mediate the processes changing our coastlines forever.

Decarbonisation has emerged as a central organising principle of contemporary climate governance. It refers both to the technical reduction of carbon emissions, and the broader socio-economic transformation that aligns production, consumption, and infrastructure with climate mitigation imperatives. Globally, buildings account for ~37% of global energy-related carbon emissions. In Singapore, the built environment contributes ~20% of national emissionsโincluding both โembodied carbonโ from material production and transportation, and operational carbon generated throughout a building's use. As urbanisation continues, emissions are anticipated to rise substantially, which will intensify the challenge of achieving net-zero emissions within the built environment. Beginning with Associate Professor ๐ ๐ฎ๐๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐๐ต, he will highlight solutions to decarbonise the building sector and current obstacles that prevent firms from adopting them. ๐๐น๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฒ๐๐ต ๐๐๐๐๐ฎ presents research investigating the potential for high-rise building typologies to evolve into low-carbon models in the future. Often associated with higher emissions today, the high-rise typology remains indispensable in high-density cities such as Singapore. This lecture will be moderated by Professor ๐ง๐ต๐ผ๐บ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฟ.

What happens when artists and scientists find common ground in shared curiosities, concerns, and collective care for ecological complexities?
Join us for a live event featuring Artists-in-Residence Ng Hui Hsien, The Observatory, and Zarina Muhammad. Spanning polyphonic storytelling, moving image, live music, and performance, this evening marks the culmination of the inaugural ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ฌ๐ข๐๐๐ง๐๐ข๐๐ฌ (๐๐๐ข๐๐ง๐๐, ๐๐๐๐ก๐ง๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ, ๐๐ซ๐ญ & ๐๐๐ฌ๐๐๐ซ๐๐ก), a pioneering collaboration between ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ and the ๐๐๐ Earth Observatory of Singapore, curated by Dr ๐๐ป๐ป๐ฎ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ต๐ถ๐ผ.
Emerging from a year-long drift into geosciences, each artist offers a unique proposition that interlaces measurements with musings, the empirical with the embodied, science with speculation, and facts with signals. Framing the evening, a selection of research materials from the NTU Earth Observatory of Singapore offers a glimpse into the complex planetary phenomena that informed the artistsโ inquiries.
Together, these acts chart a non-linear journey to the threshold of our profound unknowing of the invisible forces that shape the planet, inviting us to experience new modes of attention and attunement to the Earth.
