Some of these “mispronunciations” come from the fascinating mix of languages Singaporeans grow up speaking.

Sometimes, certain sounds simply don’t exist in another language, so naturally we adapt them. That’s part of what makes the way we speak uniquely Singaporean.

But at the same time, don’t let that stop you from being clearly understood when the situation calls for it

Pronouncing consonant clusters can be tricky. But it doesn’t have to be.

Here’s a quick tip to make it easier! Try it out with these words:

Forests
Trusts
Boasts
Roasts
Heists

Why does pronunciation matter?

It’s not about sounding “proper” all the time.
It’s about having the option.

In more formal settings, pronunciation affects how your message is received.
In casual settings, Singlish works. Too formal can even feel distant.

The key is knowing when to switch.

When you can pronounce words clearly, you can code switch when needed.
You choose how you want to come across.

That’s the goal.
Not to replace how you naturally speak, but to give you the tools.

Practice so it becomes natural to you, and you can communicate effectively in any situation.

Let your child discover the joy of speaking with confidence and creativity.
In this fun, high-energy holiday workshop, children learn to express their thoughts clearly and naturally. They build confidence not by memorising scripts, but by learning how to think and speak in the moment.
Drawing from improv theatre, children practise thinking on their feet, listening actively, and responding with spontaneity. These are real skills they can use in school and everyday life.
They will also be introduced to simple voice techniques used by radio presenters, learning how to hold attention and speak with clarity.
This is a hands-on workshop with games, discussions, and guided speaking activities.
