The Parent Who Almost Pulled Her Son Out

A few years ago, a mother sat across from me at my desk, clutching her registration form for the Asia Mathematics Olympics.

She looked up with genuine worry in her eyes and asked me a question I’ve heard dozens of times since: "What if he gets stuck? What if he can't answer the questions and this completely shatters his confidence?"

My heart went out to her. Every caring parent has that exact same protective instinct—to shield their child from difficulty and protect them from feeling "not good enough."

I looked at her and asked: "What if struggling appropriately is actually the point? What if we're not protecting his confidence, but preventing him from discovering how strong he really is?"

She took a deep breath and decided to let him try.

During the competition, her son faced problems unlike anything in his standard school textbooks. He had to pause, rethink his approach, and push past the urge to give up. The AMO format is specially designed with fill-in-the-blank questions to guide student thinking through those exact moments, step by step.

When he walked out of the hall, he wasn't defeated. He was beaming.

He ran to his mother and said, "Mom, some of those were really hard, but I kept trying and figured them out!"

This Saturday: VOS UK English Olympiad – last call to register

What it is: A British-standard English Olympiad covering grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and reasoning. Rigorous, well-structured, and unlike anything in the MOE syllabus.

Who it's for: Primary and Secondary students.

He canceled his weekend plans for the 4th time this month... only to score a 'U' grade on his practice paper.

I watched a young man look at his marked H2 Math paper last week.

He didn't get angry. He just folded it neatly in half, tucked it deep into his bag, and gave his friends a weak smile when they asked how he did.

What his friends didn't see was the months of silent sacrifice:

Skipping family dinners to grind past-year papers.

Saying "no" to outings so he could retry questions he got wrong.

The constant, nagging fear that he is disappointing his parents who worked so hard to give him this education.

Most parents sign their kids up for Math Olympiads.

Almost nobody thinks about English the same way.

And that's exactly the gap.

The VOS UK English Olympiad isn't a spelling bee. It isn't a comprehension exercise. It's a proper British Olympiad — grammar, vocabulary, reasoning, reading — benchmarked against UK standards.

Here's what I've noticed after running 52+ competitions a year across Asia:
