Local Storage Support
Raspberry Pi has added local storage capabilities for allowlisted apps in the Pi Browser, enabling approved applications to store certain data directly on a Pioneerβs device. This reduces network infrastructure costs and complexity for app developers.
- What can be stored: App configuration, session state, and other non-sensitive data β eliminating the need to run a separate backend for basic data persistence and lowering infrastructure costs.
- Privacy & security: Data is managed by the Pi Browser, never uploaded to Pi servers, and remains securely confined to the userβs device.
- Cross-platform consistency: Designed to deliver a consistent storage experience across iOS and Android.
- Important notes: Data stays tied to a specific account and device β it does not sync automatically across multiple devices. Storage is not permanent; old data may be deleted when space is full. Apps must be allowlisted to use this feature.
Staking Data API
Developers can now access an API to view the actual amount of Pi users have staked to their apps through the Ecosystem Directory staking feature.
- Returns the real staked amount, including both the quantity of Pi staked and any bonuses earned based on staking duration.
- Allows developers to integrate staking metrics directly into their apps.
- Access is currently limited to allowlisted apps during an initial testing period, to gather feedback and refine the API before broader release.
File & Video Sharing
Developers can now enable users to share files β including videos β from within their apps using the new Pi.shareFile functionality.
- Leverages the deviceβs native sharing system, so no custom sharing workflows are required.
- Use cases: Marketplace receipts, dispute-related images, in-app media sharing, game content sharing, and more.
