๐Ÿ”๏ธ Where do long-tailed gorals still survive in South Korea, and how are human activities affecting this Vulnerable species? ๐ŸฆŒ

A new study published in Oryx presents the first nationwide distribution map of the long-tailed goral (Naemorhedus caudatus) in South Korea.

Using MaxEnt distribution modelling, nationwide field surveys, camera trapping, and linear mixed-effects models, the researchers identified key habitats and environmental factors associated with goral presence.

๐Ÿ“Š Key findings:
๐ŸŒฒ 97.7% of detections were recorded in forest habitats, especially coniferous forests
โ›ฐ๏ธ Nearly 70% of detections occurred at elevations between 400โ€“800 m
๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Most populations were concentrated in the north-eastern and central-eastern mountain regions
๐Ÿšง Human disturbance factors, including paved roads and express highways, negatively affected goral occurrence
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Protected areas supported higher goral presence

The findings provide important insights for future habitat restoration, ecological corridor design, and conservation planning for this Vulnerable mountain ungulate.
