6 years old. Quiet as a mouse. Until Jayders starts acting up. 👀🎹

Meet Yi Kai — our youngest overachiever this year, quietly crushing it through our gamified programme like it’s nobody’s business. 📈

He practices. A LOT. And it shows — decent sight-reading at 6 years old is no small feat. 🎼

But here’s the plot twist parents don’t expect: Yi Kai is the quiet one in class… until his classmate Jayders decides to be silly. 😅

Then suddenly? Yi Kai’s not so quiet anymore. 🗣️

“Jayders, stop that.”
“That’s not how you do it.”
“Teacher, he’s not focusing!” 👮‍♂️

The classroom’s tiniest student has apparently appointed himself the unofficial behaviour monitor — and honestly, the dynamic is equal parts hilarious and heartwarming. A quiet kid who lets his actions (and occasional stern words) do the talking. 😂.

Turns out being quiet doesn’t mean staying silent when it matters. Yi Kai’s got focus, discipline, AND a strong sense of “we’re here to learn, guys.” 🎯

Some kids lead by talking. Yi Kai leads by practicing hard and calling it like he sees it. 🎹

The kid who asks 100 questions in every lesson… just answered them all himself. 🙋‍♂️🎹

Ethan has always been the chatty, curious one — full of questions, always wanting to know “why” and “how.” But for weeks (okay, months 😅), he was unsure at the keys. Hesitant. Second-guessing every note.

Then the questions turned into practice. And the practice turned into progress. 📈

Now? Ethan sight-reads independently — no hand-holding needed. He’s picking up trending TikTok songs by ear and playing them with both hands, just because he wanted to. 🎶🎧

Nobody asked him to learn that. He just… did.

That’s the thing about curious kids — sometimes the questions ARE the practice. They’re just processing out loud before it clicks. 💡

If your child is the “why” kid who seems unsure right now, hang in there. Curiosity is doing more work than you think.

This kid is a walking plot twist. 🎭

Naughty on a good day, “creatively unfocused” on a bad one — practice sessions with Frederic can look like a lost cause. Fingers wandering, attention wandering further. 😅

But the moment that assessment background music kicks in? Something switches on. 🔛 95% and above. Consistently. Like clockwork. 🎯

Nobody knows exactly what happens in that brain of his — but somewhere between “not paying attention” and “showtime,” Frederic is quietly locking it all in.

Some kids show their work. Frederic just shows up and delivers. 🎹✨

Maybe the real lesson here? Don’t judge the practice room performance too fast — some kids are just built different when it counts.

He’s now flying through songs faster than ever, reading his own score sheets independently (with gradually increasing difficulty, no less), and closing the gap on his big sister piece by piece.

Level 2 book? Done.
Level 3? Currently blazing through it. 🚀

Slow starts don’t mean slow finishes — sometimes the “distracted” kid just needed a little more time to fall in love with the keys. 🎶

If your little one is the “can’t sit still” type too, don’t count them out yet. Every child finds their rhythm eventually.

I taught one-to-one for three years. I still think it’s the wrong room for a playful kid.

Not because of the price. Because of what a child learns about music when the only other person in the room is an adult watching him.

If the notes are the struggle, private is fine. If the interest is the struggle, more adult attention isn’t the fix.

He didn’t stop loving piano. He stopped loving the three songs he’d played since January.

That’s the part nobody says out loud. Grade prep shrinks a whole year of music down to a handful of pieces, repeated until the exam date. An adult can tolerate that. A playful eight-year-old cannot.

So he stops sitting down on his own. You start reminding him. Now practice is a thing that happens because you nagged, and both of you quietly start dreading it.

The certificate still comes. It proves he passed a test in March. It doesn’t tell you whether he’ll still be playing in July... and that’s the only result you actually wanted.

I taught one-to-one across Singapore for 12 years before opening the school here in Bukit Timah and the 40 kids who kept playing always had one thing in common. A song that was theirs. On no syllabus. That nobody was marking.

Ask yourself one question this week: has he touched the piano without being asked?
