From Sociology at SSS to supporting others through counselling, Julianโ€™s journey is grounded in empathy, curiosity and meaningful human connection.

A Class of 2020 Sociology alumnus, Julian is currently a Counsellor / Manager at the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and also serves as Vice-President (Sociology) of the SSS Alumni Association, 4th EXCO.
Looking back on his time at SSS, Julian shares how learning Sociology and developing the sociological imagination shaped his counselling journey โ€” helping him understand personal struggles within broader social systems and connect with others with greater empathy.

His SSS experience continues to inspire him to give back to the community. Through volunteering and alumni engagement, Julian hopes to contribute to a supportive space where alumni can stay connected, share their experiences, and offer mentorship and guidance to younger graduates navigating their own journeys.

His advice to those still figuring out what comes next?

Why are internships made mandatory in your SSS journey?

Because sometimes, the best way to understand what you want to do is to actually step into the world of work.

For Year 3 Psychology student ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฌ๐š ๐†๐š๐ง ๐˜๐ฎ ๐—๐ฎ๐š๐ง, that meant spending three months with the Ministry of Home Affairsโ€™ Home Team Psychology Division.

From applying psychology concepts to practical policy recommendations to exploring crisis work, ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฌ๐šโ€™s internship gave her a chance to see her field beyond the classroom ... and helped her leave with a clearer vision of the path she wants to pursue.

And sometimes, thatโ€™s what an internship is really about: not just adding something to your CV, but finding out what makes you want to keep going.

So, what could your internship help you discover?

Some journeys take you far from home. Some become a part of home.

For ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ธ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ฎ, her journey at the School of Social Sciences was about more than the years spent studying. It was about finding her place, growing through new experiences, and building memories far from where her journey began.

And for her parents, watching their daughter navigate life away from home โ€” growing, learning and eventually graduating โ€” is a journey they will hold close too.

Years from now, it may not be only the lectures or exams that they remember most. It will also be the people she met, the moments she shared, the challenges she overcame, and the person she became along the way.

As we bring our Convocation 2026 series to a close, ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ธ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ฎโ€˜s story reminds us that university is not simply about where you study. It is about the journey you take, the memories you leave with, and the people who journey with you โ€” even from afar.

๐ŸŽ“ Congratulations, ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ธ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ฎ. May this always be a chapter you and your family look back on with pride, warmth and a little bit of nostalgia.

An evening of candid career conversations, practical insights and meaningful connections. โœจ

Yesterday, we welcomed SSS alumna Wong Weiqi back for an engaging sharing with our students and alumni on labour market trends, evolving career opportunities and her own journey in the Civil Service.

From navigating a changing job market to staying adaptable and building skills that remain relevant, the session offered plenty of food for thought for those considering their next steps.

A big thank you to Weiqi for taking the time to share her experiences and perspectives, and to everyone who joined us and contributed to the conversation.

It is always meaningful to see our alumni returning to SSS to share their experiences, reconnect with the community and support others on their own career journeys. ๐Ÿ’›

From SSS to the NDP stage. ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐ŸŽถ

Weโ€™re always proud to see where our alumni take their talents โ€” and this one is especially close to home.

SSS alumnus Gareth Fernandez is one of the songwriters behind this yearโ€™s NDP song! ๐ŸŽคโœจ

In NTUโ€™s latest feature, Gareth also shares fond memories of his time at SSS and the professors who made an impact along the way โ€” Prof Teo You Yen and Patrick Wilson. โค๏ธ

Itโ€™s always special to see our students and alumni take what theyโ€™ve learnt, found their voice, and make their mark beyond the classroom.

Some achievements deserve more than a moment. โœจ

The celebrations may have wrapped up, but there is always more to appreciate in the journeys of our students โ€” the curiosity, commitment, and countless experiences that shape who they become.

For ๐‹๐ˆ๐Œ ๐˜๐€๐ ๐‡๐„๐๐† ๐—๐€๐•๐ˆ๐„๐‘, that journey included research, internships, overseas exchanges, conferences, fieldwork and volunteering, alongside a deep commitment to creating meaningful impact.

As the recipient of the ๐™ฝ๐šƒ๐š„ ๐™ป๐šŽ๐šŽ ๐™บ๐šž๐šŠ๐š— ๐šˆ๐šŽ๐š  ๐™ถ๐š˜๐š•๐š ๐™ผ๐šŽ๐š๐šŠ๐š•, ๐—๐š๐ฏ๐ข๐ž๐ซโ€™๐ฌ story is a wonderful reminder that success is never defined by a single milestone. It is built through the people, experiences and moments that challenge us, shape us and inspire us to keep growing.

And so, we keep celebrating โ€” because there is simply no end to appreciating students who have done well. :)

Hereโ€™s to ๐—๐š๐ฏ๐ข๐ž๐ซ, and to all our graduates whose journeys are only just beginning.
