Congratulations to Prof Koh Ming Joo from NUS Department of Chemistry, who has been selected as one of 10 finalists in the Physical Sciences category of the 2026 Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year! National University of Singapore, Faculty of Science
Prof Koh’s research aims to make the synthesis of sugars and related molecules simpler and more sustainable. His team developed a light-driven method that works directly with sugars, reducing the multiple chemical steps traditionally needed to prepare them.
These molecules are important in chemistry, biology and medicine, and more efficient ways of making them could support areas such as drug discovery.

What does baking a cake have to do with building the chips that power AI?
For alumnus Dr Doreen Yong, a chemist at Applied Materials Southeast Asia, semiconductor manufacturing is a lot like baking. It requires the right ingredients, precise measurements and careful timing. The difference? Instead of a cake, she's creating the microscopic materials that allow computer chips to work better.
But her work isn't only about faster, more powerful technologies. At the earliest stages of semiconductor research, she helps develop materials that improve both chip performance and manufacturing sustainability.
“This work appears invisible but it shapes what technologies are possible and will ultimately influence how people experience technology in their daily lives,” she says.
