“Listen, these Don Play Play people – I’m not playin’ when I say they’re good.”

We recently had our social secretaries, Ashley and Marissa, on board to talk about their Homecoming experience. But we also value fulfilling both ends of the perspective – that of the inside, and out. So we asked a bunch of our own WeeKids about their favourite memories from Homecoming 2022.

Not surprisingly, a lot of them named the dinner as a top highlight. We had the pleasure of working with Don Play Play, a Japanese rice donburi (rice bowl) company. They’re a lean team serving up amazing, warm and nourishing bowls. To cater to vegetarians in our school, the team even prepared a special vegetarian bowl. We also opted for the grilled yakitori bowls, which were a top pick for students who were looking forward to an awesome night of eats, get-togethers and music after a day of lessons.

Here at WKWSCI, we enjoy working with brands and organisations who help us see that pursuing specific fields of passion can lead to broader strokes of great work. So we were honoured to work with Don Play Play for some special bowls for our students because of the intimate, human touch they pepper each bowl with. ‘Don Play’ with their vision, because the team also works tirelessly to deliver to hospitals. As communication undergraduates, we know that companies typically mount pages in their main site navigation to direct consumers or new customers to important tenets of their business. Don Play Play has a page dedicated to their work with hospitals, and we think that it’s an amazing, amazing honour for our frontliners to receive some of the best, delicious food there is from their team.

Here’s to Kimberley and the Don Play Play team! Sending lots of love. Check them out at https://www.instagram.com/donplayplaysg/ too 🥰

Planning events during the pandemic is always a challenge. There’s so much to juggle when you convert a once-physical event into something that lives online.

Au Revoir was the first online event that our Performing Arts Director, Ednalene Koh headed for the Wee Kim Wee student body. As its name implies, this event closed off the year (2021), celebrating students’ talents in music and performance, while providing all Weekids the chance to gather online to say ‘Au Revoir’ to a year of great energy.

The team pulled together a livestream from our TV studio, managing the floor, mixing sound and broadcasting live updates for giveaways and finish-the-lyric games for our online audience. Some members of our team were also overseeing brand partnerships and providing performers on standby with welfare.

We partnered with Wendy from Wendylicious , a home bakery, to bring bakes to the benches, providing performers with sweet treats to thank them for their effort.

Many appreciated the traditional treats with a modern twist, and found them delightful on a rainy evening.

They got to wash it down with icy-cold beverages from .sg – a business run by a fellow NTU student.

Despite the Covid-19 situation not letting up, we envisioned a warm end to the year. A night where performers’ voices, warm as honey, drizzled over a (only slightly) sub-Singapore weather, a night where the crew would tap their shoes against the floor gently to the rhythm of the songs performed, a night where the glowing monitors of our TV studio would light the way into a peaceful new year.

Because it’s been quite difficult. Changing management measures multiple times due to unsettled Covid-19 restrictions, tearing down ideas for events torn down, asking ourselves the big questions: How can we make digital still fun? And engaging? And enjoyable? And truly WKWSCI?

While we said ‘Au Revoir’ to our usually crowded and chatty celebrations, we carved out an online space for Weekids to bask in music and joy from the comfort of their own homes, and did what we did best –supporting the people all around us.
