"This Youths for Causes (YFC) project is about getting funds from the public and then giving it to the Singapore Anti Narcotics Association such that they can come up with better programmes to tackle the issue of drug abuse, in addition, the funds which we collect for them can be used to spread anti-drug abuse messages etc.
I embark on this project because I have seen many who have suffered from drug abuse. It is a selfish suffering, because the family members and friends of the drug abuse victims share the agony of watching their love ones suffer.
I do this project, because I strongly believe in easing their pain and helping them all.
One moment that impacted me was the Free Ice Cream Day held over at the JC side. I personally find this meaningful as it covers the aspect of enterprise, whereby we have to handle our fund management extremely well and being able to strike up deals with Marble Slab to hold this ice cream day for the students, but the real value behind this is pretty much our school value of 饮水思源. Our FIHR project can only be a success because of friends and peers who strongly supported our cause, and to thank them for the support, free ice cream was distributed in exchange for their help, and it's also to commemorate our success and share the joy with our peers."

"This fundraising initiative stemmed from my gratitude to the school, for providing students with many valuable learning opportunities, especially that of overseas exchanges. Earlier in 2013, our Principal Dr. Hon shared the plan of building this Holistic Education Centre, and how it would benefit our future juniors. Raising funds for this, in my opinion, is all part of our 饮水思源精神 and the 爱我华中 spirit. I just wanted to give back in some way, to express my gratitude to the school.
I shared my thoughts with the Director and Assistant Director of ProEd Consortium, Mr. Charles Low and Mr. Edmund Teo. I consulted the feasibility of bringing in some special handicraft from the ProEd exchange to Vietnam, a trip that I was about to go on in November 2013. Together with the help of Mr. Low’s contact in Vietnam, a total of 28 handicraft pieces were brought back.
Term 1 Week 5 2014 marked the period of the sales, three weeks after I delivered a sharing on the Vietnam exchange during the ProEd consortium assembly. Apart from the lounge-based sales, Mr. Teo suggested a novel method to market certain exquisite items from the list of handicrafts – through online bidding. I utilised Google Forms to create two online bidding documents for students and staff to bid for
1) Handmade Silk Embroidery with Wooden Frame
2) Handmade Manchester United Gift Card showcasing Old Trafford Stadium
All products were sold, raising a total of SGD$317. This fundraising event would not have been possible without the full support and encouragement of the following people:
1) Mr. Charles Low and Mr. Edmund Teo, whose unwavering guidance helped smoothen the whole learning journey.
2) Mr. Ng Seaw Choon, who gave the formal approval for this event.
3) Mr. Joseph Tan Choo Kee, who kindly accompanied me to go sourcing for the handicrafts in Hanoi.
4) Mr. Tan Chin Guan whose vital help in the logistic work ensured the smooth administrative and publicity process. Mr. Tan also helped establish contact with the ProEd Council, so that it would be possible to sell the products in the ProEd lounge.
5) The Lounge Director, Angus Yiu, and the ProEdian councilors, who assisted in mending the sales booth in the ProEd Lounge.
And of course, a big thank you to the students and staff who generously supported the fundraiser.
It has been such a fruitful and enjoyable learning journey, one through which I truly understood our school’s value of 饮水思源. It is the value of gratitude, the importance of humbling ourselves to acknowledge the help and support received, and to be thankful for the hands that have fed us."

"The National Footballers Charity Shootout was initiated to benefit Assisi Hospice, which provides care to patients with life-limiting illnesses. We invited many national footballers to come down and take part target-shooting and penalty-taking games against the public, including Hassan Sunny, Mustafic Fahrudin, Daniel Bennett, and Shi Jiayi, to name a few. The public had to pay to play, with the proceeds donated to the Hospice. We executed a marketing campaign for about a month prior, meeting the players to create promotional material for our campaign, which included features on Goal.com and Zao Bao!
This project was particularly meaningful to us as it combined two of our passions - volunteering and football. I regularly volunteer for organisations such as Assisi Hospice and Food From The Heart but this Shootout was a challenge to myself to go a step further and really lead a volunteering project on a larger-scale.
One moment that resonated deeply was when the Tampines Rovers coach brought the entire squad down to the event. We had initially agreed to have 4 of the more well-known players take part, but they insisted that they wanted to do something bigger, and together as a club. They may not be multi-millionaires like the footballers of the Premier League but they truly understand the value and importance of giving back in any capacity possible."

School Spirit is always an important factor of our daily lives. With school spirit, students feel a sense of belonging and pride to their school, and will be more comfortable and treat the school as their second home.
In this info-graphic, we have highlighted the basic information about school spirit and stated a few ways of forging school spirit in Hwa Chong. We hope that you like it :)

"The Westwood Primary School Young Student Programme is about a group of students volunteering to go to Westwood Primary School every Tuesday to give tuition to Primary 1 and 2 students who need help. These children come from low income families and they cannot afford external tuition fees. I think that this CIP is very meaningful because I am able to find joy in helping these children and also, I am able to learn a lot from them. I find that a good way to give back to society is through teaching these children. As a Hwa Chong student, we should practise our guiding principle, 饮水思源. Through 饮水思源, we can learn to better appreciate our teachers' efforts in creating a conducive environment for us to learn. This helps me grow as a person and I am very fortunate to be able to be part of this CIP."

The PERMA Model was developed by respected positive psychologist, Martin Seligman, and was widely published in his influential 2011 book, "Flourish." PERMA stands for the five essential elements that should be in place for us to experience lasting well-being.
1. Positive Emotions:
For us to experience well-being, we need positive emotion in our lives. Any positive emotion such as peace, gratitude, satisfaction, pleasure, inspiration, hope, curiosity, or love falls into this category – and the message is that it's really important to enjoy yourself in the here and now.
2. Engagement:
When we're truly engaged in a situation, task, or project, we experience a state of flow – time seems to stop, we lose our sense of self, and we concentrate intensely on the present. The more we experience this type of engagement, the more likely we are to experience well-being.
3. Relationships:
As humans, we are "social beings," and good relationships are core to our well-being. Time and again, we see that people who have meaningful, positive relationships with others are happier than those who do not.
4. Meaning:
Meaning comes from serving a cause bigger than ourselves. Whether this is a specific deity or religion, or a cause that helps humanity in some way, we all need meaning in our lives to have a sense of well-being.
5. Accomplishment:
Many of us strive to better ourselves in some way, whether we're seeking to master a skill, achieve a valuable goal, or win in some competitive event. As such, accomplishment is another important thing that contributes to our ability to flourish.

Here is the first of the Portraits of ProEdians series, which is a series of interviews with ProEdians actively involved in service learning activities and exemplifying the spirit of 饮水思源, a guiding principle of Hwa Chong Instituition.
"We are Project Keep In Touch.
Project Keep In Touch is a Youths For Causes project. To keep in touch means to maintain communications with and have up to date knowledge of someone, to care about someone, and that is what we are promoting. It's about improving the lives of the poor, the lonely, the helpless, the old, the sick and the dying in Singapore. Yes, we want to help our local community and our fellow Singaporeans. We want to remind people how fortunate they are and that they should give back to society, 饮水思源 as our school has taught us. Chairty and doing good are very big concepts itself. While we might not have the capability to be massive philanthropists, giving a bit of help becomes a lot more manageable for you and I.
Keeping in touch, giving a bit of help."
