Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu (ninjutsu) is among the few martial arts remaining today that has not been transformed into a sport, making it highly effective for self defence for men and women alike. Training is non-competitive and involves strikes, kicks, locks,

It's fantastic to have some normality in training again after the dark years of Covid-19. With uninterupted training, we are seeing kids' confidence and coordination grow right before our eyes, almost on a week-by-week basis.

Many people think that learning a martial art is like riding a bike, a skill that stays with you once learned. Sadly, this is wrong. It is more like a musical instrument; you might have passed that Grade 5 violin exam when you were 15 years old but you can't even tune the instrument now. People hate hearing this because it means they will have to work and learn and it will be hard at times. But, so what? Surely, you should think enough of yourself to believe you are worth protecting. And since you are worth protecting, putting the work into learning self defence is not only wise, it is a DECLARATION OF SELF WORTH.

Don't take the easy path, choose the path you are worthy of.

Students must ever forget that basics are not simple. Basic means pertaining to the base, the thing that everything else sits upon. The basics are not simple; they are FOUNDATIONAL. I often ask students to imagine a pyramid. Its height is limited by the size of its base. To build higher, you must constantly widen the base and rebuild from there. Ninjutsu is like that. We must always be improving our basics in order to do higher or "more advanced" techniques. The desire to improve should synonomous with the desire to have better basics. You are never too good to impove your basics.

Sometimes our feelings do not reflect reality. There are periods where we feel we are stagnating in our training and making no progress, while in reality we are improving and eveyone else can see this. Other times the opposite is true, we feel we are making progress but to others it seems we have stalled. We should not even worry about this. IT DOES NOT MATTER. Our task is simple. We turn up, train, do our best and try to learn. Just that. Over time it does not matter if you felt you had some bad sessions along the way. Some classes you will feel inspired, in others, not so much. However, you will keep getting better - hugely so - if you just keep going. It's a process and a journey and the journey is the teacher.

It's always great moment when you are teaching kids and think to yourself "why can't my adult students do it this well?"

A 'basic' block is not so basic. It requires each hand and your legs to be doing something different so it can be a coordination challenge. This makes it a fantastic skill for improving co-ordination.

Martial artists need to be able to hit and be hit. Pain is part of the journey. "Martial" means warring (Mars was the Roman god of war) and without this crucial element the martial arts are little more than a dance. This is not just a practical matter; it goes the philosophical heart of the art.

In order to defend yourself, you must believe that you are WORTH defending. You must have sufficient self worth to be able to strike another person to defend yourself and protect your loved ones. Thus confidence, and righteousness, through the martial arts is born.

The ability to be hit and keep going, the CHOICE to keep going despite the pain and difficulties and the acceptance that setbacks are part of life, is the what lies at the heart of the warrior.

The dojo is a wonderful place but occasionally it can be a confronting one, too. You will feel many emotions while training. It can be a refuge of great serenity. But when faced with stress, feelings such as fear, anger and trepidation can arise. Or the grind and regularity of training can cause apathy or folornness to take hold. Confronting yourself - and the struggle to overcome yourself - is part of the warrior's path. An immovable heart (resilience) is the primary trait of the ninja. It's our super power. In confronting what is hard, we confront ourselves - and that is where growth lies. Doing so in the dojo, in a guided way as part of ancient wise tradition, empowers you greatly in the rest of your life.

The five fundanmental forms of Sanshin no Kata (Chi, Sui, Ka, Fu & Ku or Earth, Water, Fire, Wind & Void) are deep in significance. One of their functions is to teach us HOW to learn.

Learning how to learn is a breathrough that transforms every lesson into a learning event where real skill and knowledge are gained. Students then start making clear improvements on a lesson-to-lesson basis. It's exciting to watch!
