PSLE Science tip: Observation vs Conclusion 🔬

If I say, “Winter colours don’t suit me,” is that an observation or a conclusion?

I went for a colour analysis and found out I’m actually a Spring. This turned into a great real-life PSLE Science example.

An observation is what you can see or measure.
A conclusion is what you decide based on the evidence.

This distinction is especially important in PSLE Science experiment and process skills questions.

Save this for revision if you often mix up observation and conclusion.

During my PSLE Science group lesson today, some students answered the MCQs very quickly and rated their confidence as high as 9/10.

But some of those answers were wrong.

In PSLE Science, each MCQ is worth 2 marks, so rushing can become very costly.

The problem is not always a lack of Science knowledge. Sometimes students recognise the topic, assume they know what is being asked, and answer too quickly.

Slow down. Read the question carefully. Check the clues. Then choose the correct option to answer.

Confidence does not score marks. Accuracy does

Parents often ask me why their child knows PSLE Science concepts but still loses marks in exams.

One of the biggest reasons isn’t a lack of knowledge.

Students answer before they fully analyse what the question is asking.

In my lessons, I teach students to slow down, identify the key information, and answer the question the examiner actually asked.

Knowing Science is important.
Knowing how to answer is what helps students score.

Different animals. Different questions. Same PSLE Science concept.

One question is about birds fluffing up their feathers.
Another is about the animal’s thick fur.

Most students memorise answers.
Students need to recognise they’re testing the same idea:
Air trapped between the feathers or fur reduces heat loss, helping the animal stay warm.

That’s how PSLE Science works. It doesn’t reward memorisation, it rewards understanding.

Can one simple experiment become THREE different PSLE Science questions? Absolutely!

Students memorise PSLE Science facts but struggle when the same concept is tested in different ways. In this video, I use a simple evaporation experiment to show how PSLE Science can assess:

✔️ Explanation
✔️ State

Understanding the concept is what helps students tackle unfamiliar questions with confidence.

Most people gave this answer 1 mark… but would a Singapore PSLE examiner agree?
