Three days. New faces. New friendships. Plenty of action.
From team challenges and sports to dragon boating, MECHANOVA 2026 brought our freshmen together for three fun-filled days beyond the classroom.
There were wins, laughs, a little friendly competition and plenty of memorable moments along the way. More importantly, it was a chance to make new friends and start their ME journey together.

What a fun Saturday! 🧡💙
From talks in the lecture halls to conversations with our students and staff, and from lab tours to hands-on workshops, thank you for making CDE Open Day 2026 such an amazing one!
We hope you enjoyed exploring Mechanical Engineering, getting a glimpse into life at CDE and experiencing all the robots, projects and good vibes that made the day one to remember!

We catch up with our Robotics and Machine Intelligence (RMI) students during a pre-finals bonding session.
We checked in on how they are feeling heading into exams and what they are doing to stay on track.

Our Mechanical Engineering students recently visited ATC and GD Precision Headquarters to get a closer look at how engineering comes to life in the workplace.
The visit gave students the opportunity to observe how concepts learnt in class connect to real-world operations, from precision machining and fabrication to broader manufacturing workflows and systems.
It also offered a fresh perspective on how far manufacturing has evolved beyond its traditional image.
Gerry Ong, CEO of GD Precision, shared, “Many students were surprised to see that manufacturing today is highly advanced, with Artificial Intelligence (AI), autonomous technology and smart systems shaping how we operate at GD Precision.”
Experiences like these also show why company visits remain an important part of engineering education, giving students the chance to better understand what engineering looks like in practice.
Harsh Ahuja, a Year 2 Mechanical Engineering student, shared, “It’s one thing to do one’s own research about the company and its operations online. But being able to actually visit and interact with the workspace gives us a wider perspective of being an engineer at the company.”

We went around asking a few of our students to guess our 2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject for Mechanical Engineering!
Some were quite confident, some gave surprisingly solid reasons, and some were just trying to make their best guess.
Then we revealed the answer… and a few of them were genuinely surprised!

If you are looking for a Special Term 1 elective, ME4263 Fundamentals of Product Development is one worth checking out!
This course offers a more hands-on way to explore how products go from idea to actual build.
You will also get exposure to different perspectives in class through sessions with professors from the United States alongside our professors, while having the opportunity to work on design projects with access to fabrication facilities, with guidance from technicians.

Going up against the world and coming away with 9 awards? That is no small feat.
The Additive Manufacturing (AM) Benchmark Challenge 2025 brought together 24 groups from around the world, with 84 entries submitted across 19 challenge problems. The competition tests how accurately researchers can predict and simulate additive manufacturing processes and outcomes.
Amid this strong global field, Assoc Prof Wentao Yan and his team emerged as one of the top performers, clinching an impressive 9 of the 25 awards presented. Their haul included 3 First Place, 4 Second Place and 2 Honourable Mention awards across different challenge areas.
Assoc Prof Yan reflected, “What makes the challenge difficult is that we need to predict complex additive manufacturing process and outcomes first-time-right without experimental calibration. The team’s strong performance was driven by our consistent emphasis on physically rigorous and generalisable models rooted in fundamental theory and numerical implementation, instead of hard-fitting and tunings. This makes our model accurate and reliable across various conditions.”
Congratulations once again to Assoc Prof Yan and his team on this outstanding achievement. We look forward to seeing their work continue to push additive manufacturing forward.
