You can’t learn it just by reading and understanding. You have to really do it and learn from mistakes.

It’s like doing maths problem sums. You can’t know how to do maths by reading the concept. You have to practise it in order for the concept to get in, for the logic and steps to internalise.

It is also why 听写 (spelling) works, and 默写 (dictation) works. Because you don’t know you don’t know a word/character until you are required to write it from memory, without seeing it. Same with sentence structure and grammar, that is why 造句 (forming sentences) works.

Modern education tends to demonise practice and think AI / someone else can do the learning for you. But some things cannot be changed.

Basic fundamentals of language, logic and skills— that humans ought to learn and acquire, still require rote teaching at times, and rigorous practice in others.

Today's word is Nathan, which can be a common name in the English circles, a prophet in the Bible, or a former president of Singapore.
