Vocabulary Word Study Lesson for my 10 year old !

Hello everyone ! It’s been a while since I last shared, so here’s a peek into a recent vocabulary word study lesson!

Part I - Words to replace “walk”!
Using a “walk spectrum” (ambled → wandered → plodded → trudged), L explored how different words reflect feelings, energy levels, and intent. He then tried to craft his own sentences linking the vocabulary

Part II - Playing with vocabulary
Instead of drilling vocabulary, I challenged him to create a nonsense story using the new words. He wrote it in perspective of an ant.

I feel that by listing meanings, it is rather hard for students to comprehend how to apply in stories.
But by putting them into a story (even a silly one!), this helps students to understand how words actually work.

Learning 听写 can be tough — and kids often dread it. Why? Because drilling is boring! 😅✏️
Instead of copying the same words over and over, we doodle to remember the meaning. 🎨
It’s fun, creative, and the words actually stick!
When learning feels like play, kids can’t wait to do it again.

3 Easy and Fun Steps to Teach Our Children Chinese Fruit Words:

1) Prepare some Post-it notes and head to the supermarket to match Chinese words with real fruits.

2) Match the names of fruits with descriptive words.

3) Print out the fruit picture printables. Use a wheel of names to spin for the Chinese words, and have your child pick the corresponding fruits.

Comment “fruits” on this post and I will share with you the link to play point 3 activity !

Sharing an abstract that I have read recently from the book, “The self driven child.”

Social media often paints a beautiful picture on people’s lives.

Do I struggle in teaching my own children ?
- Yes

Does all learning activities are smooth sailing ?
- No

Thus, recently I have been thinking about have I done enough to motivate my child to be independent in his learning ?

This abstract resonates in me and my reading !

The middle “a” and “e” sounds can be confusing for some children.

Here is an activity that I have been doing with my 5 year old.

We roll, read and spell.

I have asked some of my SDR teacher friends on how to differentiate the “e” and “a” sounds. It is actually through the size of your mouth when pronouncing these words.

But familiarity with these words will be another strategy to help them learn to spell these words.
