Message from the Chair of MAE:
We have participated in the Shell Eco-Marathon since 2009, the year when we sent a team to Germany. Our motivation in participating is twofold. The first is to have a project with a real time line and performance target, to challenge the creativity and tenacity of our students. Building a car from scratch is a significant endeavour that can’t be done by following textbooks. It requires our students to discover the problems and issues and then work out the solutions for themselves. The second is the opportunity to pitch our students’ ability and creation against those of other students from other countries. This serves as a motivation factor and also a goal, which can propel our students to greater heights.
Practical projects like building cars require a significant amount of resources, financially and in terms of manpower, space and equipment. The investment has been more than justified by the enthusiasm and dedication of our students. Their energy and drive and the good performance of their cars have brought excellent results and credit to the school and the university. But all these pale in comparison to the educational value that have been imparted on the teams of young men and women who have volunteered a great deal of their time and effort to create something lectures and textbooks alone could not have brought forth. This is practical education at its best.
I like to pay homage to the two teams of students who have worked very hard to build the two cars for the races in Sepang this year. I also like to thank their faculty advisors, Prof Ng Heong Wah and Dr Francis Nickols for keeping the teams on the straight and narrow.
I wish you all the very best at the races.
