Winners of the High Achievement Award, NUS Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Prize & CDE Innovation & Research Award 2025, are Diya Subramanian, Zhang Hanrui, Ooi Jie Min, Jayachandran Deepsri, Koh Qi Jie, Ong Jia Wen Amelia, Lakshmi Sujeesh.

Winners of the Merit Award, CDE Innovation & Research Award 2025, are Tan Yi Hong Julian & Divyalakshmi Balasubramaniam.

Assistant Professor Eliza Fong's team develops new platform that significantly reduces drug testing and screening time for cancer patients

Short excerpt: In collaboration with the National Cancer Centre Singapore, Dr. Fong and team have developed a novel platform that can significantly reduce the time needed to determine the efficacy of anti-cancer drugs. In this first-of-its-kind technology, patient tumours resected from surgery can now be grown using bioengineered hydrogels and better preserved ex vivo (outside of the body) compared to standard approaches, potentially accelerating the process for drug screening and testing for individual cancer patients.

The results of this study were published in the journal Biomaterials on 20 January 2024.

NUS BME Students (Thura Soe, Soo Jun Boon, Teo Yu Xuan, Zhou Shude & Syarwina Ridwan) clinched the 1st runner up for their non-invasive blood glucometer at the Engineering Innovation Challenge (EIC) 2023! The team received the award from Mr Heng Swee Keat, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economics Policies during the recent National Engineers Day (NED) Prize Presentation Ceremony 2023.

We are extremely proud that Assistant Professor Eliza Fong has just been awarded the prestigious NMRC-OF Individual Research Grants (IRGs) for the July 2022 call!

Dr. Fong will be investigating the use of biomaterials engineering approaches to maintain patient-derived tumor explants ex vivo for personalized drug testing.

Congrats to Assistant Professor Andy Tay for being awarded with NCID Fellowship.

Assistant Professor Andy Tay, Presidential Young Professor from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the College of Design and Engineering, has been awarded a short-term fellowship from the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) for a two-week exchange to the University of Sydney in November 2022.

During his visit, Asst Prof Tay will learn about phage manufacturing as well as share on the use of bio and nanomaterials to enhance phage therapy for combating multidrug resistance bacterial species.

Honoured by the World Economic Forum in its Class of 2020 Young Scientists for his contribution to cutting edge research, Asst Prof Tay also made it to Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list under the Science category in 2019. He was recognised for his research in modulating pain with magnetic hydrogels, which can be used to treat pain without the use of drugs or other invasive therapies.
