I wrote this open water swimming article 8 years ago, but you know what they say - old is gold. You can find the full article on our FB page but for those of you racing Singapore, here are some race day tips:
1) Donβt let the excitement of racing get the better of common sense - if you are not a strong swimmer, donβt rush in once the gun goes. Pick your line, walk down the beach and find some clear water.
2) A good draft is worth itβs weight in gold. Finding a good pair of feet to follow will get you to the finish faster. Just donβt annoy the swimmer youβre following.
3) If things get a bit hectic and you feel your anxiety building up, calmly breaststroke to the side and catch your breath. It will give you a chance to check your navigation as well.
4) Nobody wants to get hit in the face. But blindly swimming through a crowd of triathletes certainly increases the likelihood of that happening. Adopt a defensive mindset and give everyone a bit of space.
5) Open water swimming is a huge challenge so embrace it! The water & race conditions may occasionally push you out of your comfort zone, but thatβs part of the beauty of triathlon. Enjoy yourself and stay safe!
