Something for the Millenials! โถ๏ธ These albums were released end 1980s to early 1990s, probably the last wave of releases on cassette tapes before CDs became the dominant music format in the early 1990s ๐ฟ Some titles were probably available on CDs too. Some huge hits here - Dying Inside to Hold You, Superwoman, You're My Inspiration, Set Adrift on Memory Bliss, When Will I be Famous, etc ๐ถ Anyone humming these as you read the post? ๐คญ Available at the shop, make an appointment to purchase! ๐ฉ๐ปโ๐ค

A memory from 2018! โฝ Had to Google where the World Cup was held in 2018 as I don't remember - it was in Russia! ๐ท๐บ Personal opinion - does anyone feel the mascots from the past are so much cuter? ๐

Doing this post as I'm zipping off to my next appointment today ๐ Here's a collector's tip - materials can tell you how old items are! ๐๐ป Take these 3 vintage jewellery pouches for example, each has a zip made with a different material - brass, aluminium, and plastic. The pouch with the brass zip is the oldest as brass was common pre-1950s, then came aluminium, and finally plastic ๐ณ Some materials just couldn't have existed before a certain time because of manufacturing technology and affordability, so use this simple logic to guide you on your collecting journey! ๐

Remember when mum bought jewellery and she gave the small pouch they came in to you to keep your little treasures or coins? ๐ช Did anyone else have a small coin purse like this growing up? ๐ I did! Some of these vintage pouches are branded with the names of the goldsmith shops they came from ๐ช Let me know if you're looking for any particular one! ๐ Vintage jewellery pouches available to purchase at our shop, bring home a piece of childhood nostalgia! โค๏ธ Visits by appointment๐๐ป

You never really think about our lighthouses and their functions ๐จ Three out of the five current Singapore lighthouses were built in the 1800s, so they have been crucial to our port operations from the time of Raffles till now! ๐ฎ I'm so glad the MPA has launched new tours to the Sultan Shoal Lighthouse, which allow more people to understand just how dynamic our maritime industry is ๐ฏ
On this trip, we not only get to see the lighthouse - on the 1hr boat ride there, we also get an education on port operations (container shipping, bunkering activities, transhipment, etc) and an idea of just how game-changing the new Tuas Megaport will be! ๐ฆพ At present, Singapore might be the top bunkering (marine fueling) hub and transhipment port in the world (handling 44million containers last year ๐คฏ), but we are going full steam ahead to future-proof the port as we did with containerisation in the 1960s๐๐ป
Passing Jurong Island on the way, I'm also surprised at how massive this petrochemical hub is, made from amalgamating 7 offshore islands ๐๏ธ Our guides from Lion Heartlanders did an excellent job of not just telling us about the hardware but also the heart-ware of the maritime industry and its workers - for our port never sleeps (not even during COVID)! โค๏ธ The tour of the lighthouse is actually a gateway to learning more about our fascinating maritime industry (of course the lighthouse itself is gorgeous! ๐) I heard some dates are already full, so quickly sign up for the tour at this link below. Thanks for the invitation MPA! https://www.eventbrite.sg/o/maritime-and-port-authority-of-singapore-33118319721

Someone just reminded me that today is the 6th of June and I remember my dad saying in an interview that he joined the SAF as a regular in 6.6.66! ๐ช So today marks the 60th anniversary of his career in the defence and security of Singapore - one that spans more than 50 years! ๐ธ๐ฌ I don't think he would have ever imagined that this 'job' would bring such rich life-changing experiences - from land to sea, and overseas training and missions ๐ช๐ป He's an insider to how our defence forces developed right from the beginning of Singapore's independence ๐๐ป
I selected some pages from his book the SAFTI Runabout - People, Places & Events, to commemorate the occasion ๐ After all, SAFTI is where it all started! ๐ฏ Get in touch if you would like to purchase a copy! ๐

Thanks to the tour I attended by on New Harbour and the surrounding area, I can now better appreciate this vintage calendar! ๐๐ป The picture shows the view from the top of Mount Faber towards the greenery of Sentosa, with the wharves of Keppel Harbour in the foreground (present day Harbourfront area) ๐๏ธ There's even what looks like a ship parked in the dry dock โด๏ธ This item was made for the Japanese market, as evident from the calendar, and inadvertently captures a landscape that has completely changed today and is still changing ๐ธ๐ฌ Ironically the calendar itself can be used indefinitely as it's perpetual! ๐ For sale at the shop now.

Your eyes are not playing tricks on you ๐๏ธ Yes that Record clamp is really huge, and so is that brass nautical steering wheel ๐ Both sold and collected today, thanks to the customer who like my dad, was/is a diver and also loves hardware! ๐ ๏ธ I've been saying for years that I should make a record of the tools and nautical items we have. Well that list is still a WIP, haha. Meanwhile, get in touch if you're looking for any vintage tools or maritime items! ๐ง๐ฆพ
