In a crowded shop, selling something as big as this vintage 180cm tall teak cabinet tucked away in a corner means lots of planning and moving of a million small things around it ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป But it also means a new space opens up for display! โ™ฅ๏ธ And uncovering of items that I forgot were in the shop, haha. My dad rarely talks about his work in the army ๐Ÿช– He was the commander of the small but specialised Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) of the SAF 36 Singapore Combat Engineers (SCE) ๐Ÿ’ฃ In the 1970s, they were kept busy with the disposal of unexploded WWII shells found on HDB construction sites ๐Ÿ—๏ธ But in 1978, the SAF received an urgent request for help from the government of Bangladesh ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฉ They had discovered a large unexploded war relic near an important factory! ๐Ÿญ

Next Sunday 13 Sept, listen to a firsthand account of my dad's experience leading a small team to Bangladesh to make safe and remove the 272kg aerial bomb in what was a challenging and risky operation ๐Ÿ˜ฎ It's the first time he's speaking on this topic so come by the Military Hobby Fest to learn about one of SAF's earliest overseas missions! ๐Ÿซก

โ˜•The month kicked off with bringing our favourite kopitiam set to the Loving Hearts Multi-Service Centre. Loving Heart MSC
๐ŸŽ’ A meaningful engagement at Clementi Primary School sharing stories of Singapore heritage with the schoolkids.
๐ŸŽช Did my first Reminiscence Workshop at the Katong-Joo Chiat Heritage Festival at Katong Presbyterian Church. Love the enthusiastic response!
๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Rounded off the month at the Loving Hearts Community Day interacting with the lovely residents of Yuhua.

Winston Wong talks about the Gillman Barracks not as a standalone British base, but as part of the massive Pasir Panjang-Ayer Rajah Military Complex. It was a transit camp for the School of Combat Engineers, which moved out in a few years.

As we discuss the likely environmental and historical impact of the HDBโ€™s plan to redevelop Gillman around nature, Winston is concerned that it would be difficult to strike a balance between heritage, nature and development.

One booth - many stories! โ™ฅ๏ธ Thanks to the seniors who generously shared their memories with me last Sun at the Loving Heart MSC carnival in ! ๐Ÿ˜„

๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ One lady told me how they used to sit on the slopes of Fort Canning to hear the performances at the National Theatre when they couldn't get tickets ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽญ

๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ Someone shared how her mum will tell her not to talk loudly (ไธๅฏไปฅไนฑ่ฎฒ่ฏ) when she whisked the eggs for steamed egg cake ้ธก่›‹็ณ• or else the cake wouldn't 'huat'. "Mum will scold me!"๐Ÿฅš

๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ Chapteh used to be made from chicken feathers and the base cut from rubber. Not as colourful as the ones we have now! ๐Ÿ“

Other highlights of the day - seeing the seniors enjoying themselves with fun games and activities ๐ŸŽฏ and eating ice cream and muah chee๐Ÿฆ, meeting and shaking hands with Yuhua MP Grace Fu, and taking a photo with the very green Captain Green! ๐Ÿธ๐Ÿ“ธ
