假期创意写作圆满结束!这次我们结合英文和华文教学,让学生自己制作出一个属于自己的中英文立体童话故事书。
在过程中孩子的创造力总能让人吓一跳,他们将童话故事《小红帽》改编成自己的故事,有的是大野狼和小红帽变成脸书上的好友,也的是大野狼变得友善,和小红帽成为了永远的朋友呢!

This holiday, we combined English and Chinese, and let the students create their own fairytale storybook.
Students’ imagination always surprises me. They made their own version of “Little Red Riding Hood”. In one version, Little red riding hood and the big bad wolf made friends on Facebook. In another, little red riding hood and the nice wolf became best friends!

《Creative writing class》
This class has been ongoing for 3 months already, and I'm surprised at how fast the students are improving.
At the end of each class, the students always disappointedly proclaim, "Class is over already?" Seeing how much these students are enjoying lessons always gives me a sense of joy.
In this week's class, as exercise to improve their descriptive abilities, I let the students design their own pencil cases, then prepare a presentation describing their design.

这堂课已经开课3个月了,意外地发现孩子进步神速。
学生们总在下课时突然冒出:“哇!怎么这么快就下课?”看到孩子们乐在其中的样子,老师不禁露出会心的微笑。
在这次的小三创意作文班的课程中,为了带领学生们练习物的描写,先准备了各式各样的材料和简单的铅笔盒,让学生们各自发挥做出自己的铅笔盒,并在纸上打好文稿后,上台练习介绍自己的铅笔盒。

When students talk about “O-bike”, they will definitely bring up the point of convenience.
But when I ask: “What is the price of this convenience,” the more observant kids will state: “Parking at inappropriate places.” And that is another point-of-view for students to think about.

There are few angles students can discuss regarding this topic:
1. Do you think the company is responsible for the problem?
2. Do you think the citizen’s inconsideration is the cause of this problem?
3. Do you think the government is responsible for making Singapore a more bicycle-friendly environment?

与中学的学生讨论到o-bike的话题时,学生们一定会提到“方便性”的好处。
但是当我反问:“在这个“方便”之下,你们还有什么的看法?“
机灵的孩子,立刻回答:“乱停乱放”。对了,我又为孩子开启了看待问题的另一个角度。

延伸话题如下:
1. 你认为厂商应不应该负起乱摆放脚踏车的责任?
2. 你觉得人民的素养不足,是不是导致脚踏车乱摆放的主要原因?
3. 你觉得政府应该建立友善的脚踏车环境吗?

《K2 孩子的展示与演说》
这次由老师以填空的方式,让孩子写下自己铅笔盒的颜色、图案和用处,再加上孩子对铅笔盒的想法。
这样的训练,除了让孩子明白整个演说的程序外,也在带领孩子掌握写物的描写基本方法。

It's the Mid-autumn festival next Wednesday! Let us learn some vocabulary words and sentences that can be used when we are talking about it.

《例文》
一年一度的中秋节又到了,每个购物中心到处是忙着选购月饼礼盒的人群,还有热心的推销员促销着月饼,过节的气氛也因此越来越浓烈。

《词汇》
一年一度(yì nían yí dù)- yearly
中秋节(zhōng qiū jié)- Mid-autumn festival
熱心(rè xīn)- ardent
促銷(cù xīao)- peddle
氣氛濃烈(qì fēn nóng liè)- rich ambience

花好月圆(huā hǎo yué yuan) - a phrase used to describe a beautiful night scenery, usually during the Mid-autumn festival
满月(mǎn yuè)- full moon
赏月 as in 全家赏月(quán jiā shǎng yuè)- stargaze (the full moon)

With regards to this question, there has been a lot of talk about whether this way of testing is really the right way or whether we are over-stressing our children with unnecessarily hard questions. However, I don't want to discuss about these issues. Rather, I want to talk about how we can allow students to score even under such circumstances.

For questions such as this, careful examination will reveal that the answer can be inferred from the question. Besides identifying the connections between the text and the choices provided, students will also need to identify the nuances. Let us first take a look at the question...

---------题目---------
(A同学穿了一件新衣服。)
👦B同学问A:“你买了一件新衣服啊?”
👧A同学说:“不是买的,是我妈妈亲手帮我缝的,你觉得漂亮吗?”
👦B同学说:“漂亮极了,我不知道你妈妈还会缝制衣服呢!”

问题:A同学接下来会说什么?
1. 我妈妈一有空就帮我缝衣服
2. 我妈妈不喜欢花钱买衣服
3. 我妈妈刚刚开始学缝制衣服

---------Roughly translated---------
(Student A was wearing a new set of clothes.)
👦B: You bought a new set of clothes?
👧A: No, these were not bought, my Mom sewed them for me. Do you think they look pretty?
👦B: Very! I didn't know your Mom knew how to sew.

How would A respond next?
1. My Mom sews me clothes every time she is free.
2. My Mom doesn't like to spend money on clothes.
3. My Mom just started learning to sew.

Now, upon first look, all three choices seem to fit in the conversation. However, if we were to look at the context of the conversation, we would notice that only one of them is actually a relevant answer. Looking at the last line (B: Very! I didn't know your Mom knew how to sew), we can see that the focus of this sentence is on Mom's ability to sew. Now let's look at the choices:

1. Focuses on when Mom sews clothes
2. Focuses on Mom's financial preferences
3. Focuses on Mom's sewing ability

As can be seen, only 3 is relevant with respect to the context. As adults, most of us are able to grasp this concept at a subconscious level, which is why most of us will guess "3" if forced, even if we are unable to explain why. However, for our young students, this concept is not as intuitive, and they would need to be able to do a full analysis of the question (as shown above) in order to choose an answer. This is the type of analysis I like to focus on in lessons.

Questions like these will always appear. Moreover, these types of questions are only one of the many types that students will face during exams. Students need to be able to identify which type of question they are facing, and then have the ability to answer them. These answering techniques is something that I find as valuable, if not more, than simply just teaching the students to be good at Chinese.
