๐ŸŒ‹ Seen from space: The eruption of Anak Krakatau, captured on 5 September 2026.

True- and false-colour imagery from CBERS-4, received at the CRISP ground station, shows the eruption plume extending westwards across the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra.

A Himawari-9 volcanic ash classification from the same day provides a wider view of the plumeโ€™s spread. The eruption sent ash high into the atmosphere, disrupting air travel across the region.

Bringing Earth Observation into schools! ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ

CRISP Associate Scientist Tan Li Ming delivered an assembly talk at Hillgrove Secondary School on 12 August 2026 as part of the National STEM Championship: Game On 2026 x The Smart Local (TSL) Media Group.

During the session, Li Ming introduced students to the world of remote sensing and Earth observation, sharing how satellites help us observe our planet and how satellite imagery and AI can be used to understand environmental change, respond to disasters, and address real-world challenges.

Students also got a glimpse into what a career in remote sensing looks like, from the different roles within the field to the diverse pathways that can lead to a career working with Earth observation data. Students also took part in interactive quizzes, putting their observation skills to the test by identifying familiar places from satellite images. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ

We hope the session inspired students to look at our planet from a new perspective โ€” and perhaps even consider a future in Earth observation and geospatial science!

From 5-19 July 2026, our associate scientist Amihan Manuel took part in the 2026 International Ocean Colour Coordinating Group (IOCCG) Summer Lecture Series - Frontiers in Ocean Optics and Ocean Colour Science. The training was held on the island of San Servolo in Venice, Italy, and hosted by the Italian National Council of Research - Institute of Marine Sciences (CNR-ISMAR) and Venice International University (VIU).

Over the two-week course, expert lecturers covered the fundamentals of ocean optics through to its applications across several remote sensing platforms and sensors. On July 11th, participants also took part in a field excursion around the Venice lagoon, where they used various instruments such as the Mini-Secchi for taking Secchi disk measurements and the HydroColor app for estimating water quality using their phone cameras.

It was a rewarding two weeks that covered key topics in ocean optics and fostered lasting connections with ocean colour scientists worldwide. We're grateful to IOCCG, CNR-ISMAR, VIU and all the expert lecturers and sponsors who made this valuable learning experience possible.

Derby is a small town situated in the Kimberley Region at the northern part of Western Australia. It sits on the mud flats of King Sound on an isolated stretch of coastline. The interesting fractal patterns surrounding the town are formed by the rivers and their tributaries draining into King Sound. Derby is the gateway to many tourist destinations in the Kimberley Region. The legendary Gibb River Road that leads eastwards to various gorges, waterfalls and stunning landscapes is visible at the southeast corner of the image.

The port of Belawan located at the Strait of Melaka is the busiest seaport in Indonesia outside of Java. The port plays an important role in the export of regional products like palm oil and rubber. Its facilities include multiple wharves for containers, bulk, and ferry services. To the west of the port are residential and commercial areas of Belawan. Across the river on the northern part of the image is a wetland with mangroves and aquaculture farms. A small fishing village can also be seen at the northwest quadrant.

TENKE FUNGURUME MINE, LUALABA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO

The Tenke Fungurume Mine is named after the two neighbouring towns of Tenke and Fungurume in the province of Lualaba, Democratic Republic of Congo. Situated in the Central African Copperbelt, the mining concession occupies an area of approximately 1,500 square kilometers. It is currently the worldโ€™s fifth largest copper mine and second largest cobalt mine. Bright exposed soil and mining pools are seen in the image with a processing facility located at the northeast quadrant.
