The Centre for Remote Imaging, Sensing and Processing (CRISP) is a research centre of the National University of Singapore established with funding from the Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR) of Singapore.

From 3–5 February 2026, our Associate Scientist, Tan Li, participated in the Workshop on Transboundary Air Pollution: Strengthening ASEAN-APCTT Cooperation through Integrated Technology, Policy, and Field Practices for Sustainable Air Quality in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Organised by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), in collaboration with the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) and the Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology (APCTT), the workshop brought together regional partners to strengthen capacity in satellite and geospatial technologies for fire and transboundary air pollution monitoring across the region.

It was a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and regional collaboration in advancing sustainable air quality management within ASEAN.

Cemaga Utara, Natuna Besar, Kepulauan Riau, Indonesia

This image shows the coastal region near the village of Cemaga Utara in the southeastern part of Natuna Besar Island. Untouched by human development, the coastal land is covered by lush mangrove forests and wetland vegetation. White sandy beaches stretch for kilometers along the southern coastline. The cyan regions consist of a diversity of shallow benthic features, including live corals, submerged at different water depths.

From 10 to 12 February 2026, our research scientist Chia Aik Song participated in the 10th Joint Project Team Meeting for Sentinel Asia, held in Dubai, UAE.

Sentinel Asia (https://sentinel-asia.org/) is an initiative aimed to foster space-based international cooperation for disaster management in the Asia-Pacific region. Members of Sentinel Asia meet yearly at the Joint Project Team Meeting (JPTM) to share the latest updates and research insights covering the whole disaster management cycle, from mitigation/preparedness to post-disaster recovery.

This was the first JPTM to be held in West Asia, and was attended by 67 participants from 36 satellite remote sensing and disaster management organizations. On the evening of the first day, the attendees got to enjoy a tour of the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), which includes facilities for satellite construction, as well as a mission control centre for commanding and controlling Dubai's earth observation satellites after they are launched.

ESA PolInSAR-Biomass 2026

From 26-30 January 2026, 172 researchers gathered in Ljubljana, Slovenia for
(i) the 12th International Workshop on Science and Applications of SAR Polarimetry and Polarimetric Interferometry,
(ii) the 6th Biomass Science Workshop, and
(iii) the 1st Biomass Calibration / Validation Meeting

The event highlighted the latest advances in polarimetric SAR, early BIOMASS mission results, and progress in calibration/ validation and carbon modelling applications.

Our research scientist, Dr Lee Ken Yoong, presented a poster on detecting reflection symmetry in polarimetric SAR imagery, examining the mathematical relationship between block-diagonality test statistics and multiple correlation coefficients. The applicability of multiple correlation coefficient and complex coefficient was studied for reflection symmetry testing.

A meaningful week of scientific exchange and collaboration within the global SAR community.

What a historic moment for Singapore! The announcement of a National Space Agency marks an important milestone in strengthening our national space and geospatial capabilities.

At CRISP, satellite imagery and geospatial analytics have long been central to our work – supporting applications ranging from environmental monitoring and disaster response to AI-enabled Earth observation.

We look forward to continuing our contributions to Singapore’s space and geospatial ecosystem through applied research, innovation, and collaboration across government, industry, and academia.

Labuan Bajo, Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

Labuan Bajo is a coastal town located at the western end of the island of Flores, the largest island in the province of East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Once a fishing village, Labuan Bajo has now become a tourist centre. The Waterfront Marina area at the south is the starting point for island hopping and offers scenic views of the harbour. The Komodo International Airport located east of the town serves as the main gateway to the nearby Komodo National Park, home to the famous Komodo dragons.

From 2 – 4 December 2025, CRISP had the pleasure of hosting students from the MOE Geography Talent Development Programme for their Work Attachment Programme. Over the three days, students were introduced to satellite remote sensing, Google Earth Engine, and the diverse research areas our team works on – from atmospheric monitoring and vegetation studies to AI, SAR, and disaster applications.

They also visited our ground station, learned about real-time satellite operations, and interacted with CRISP staff from various teams during the job talk session.

We were impressed by the students’ curiosity, enthusiasm, and thoughtful questions throughout the programme. Thank you for spending the week with us and we hope the experience sparked new interest in Earth observation, geospatial technologies, and the many ways they support our world.

CRISP Director Dr. Lim Kim Hwa participated in the 34th ASEAN Sub-Committee on Space Technology and Applications (SCOSA) Meeting, held from 19–20 October in Bangkok, Thailand.

This meeting was especially significant as it marked the final chapter of SCOSA, which has now merged with the Sub-Committee on Marine Science and Technology (SCMSAT) and the Sub-Committee on Meteorology and Geophysics (SCMG) to establish a new sub-committee.

While it is bittersweet to bid farewell to SCOSA, we are excited about the opportunities ahead as we embark on a new era of regional collaboration bridging space, marine, meteorology, and geophysical sciences.

We look forward to contributing to this next phase of ASEAN cooperation.
