Hwa Chong International School

HCIS held its 4th Lawcon on 15 August 2026. Students from 13 schools attended the one-day conference, which consisted of a mock jury and a moot.

We were very honoured to have Miss Edith Chen as our Guest Speaker. Miss Chen is an Associate Professor at the School of Law, Singapore University of Social Sciences, where she teaches Family Law. Miss Chen talked about how Family Law in Singapore will and is evolving as our society changes. Her talk presented the context for our students’ mock jury and moot.

This year’s moot problem explores the welfare of a child in the event of a divorce, and as such, what is in the best interest of the child and the determination of care and control of the child, particularly in the case of joint custody. These principles are linked to those as outlined in the Women’s Charter Act. HCIS partnered with Future Lawyers Singapore (FLS), who mentored our academic team in crafting the case notes and case brief. FLS also served as our judges.

FLS is the Singapore chapter of Future Lawyers International, a youth-led non-profit organisation dedicated to educating, empowering and inspiring youths to consider a pathway in the legal field.

We are immensely proud to share that our graduate, Thor Jack Alve Rutgersson (Class of 2024), has been awarded the MHA Uniformed Scholarship (Singapore Civil Defence Force).

Thor was recognised at The Singapore Police Force Scholarship & Ministry of Home Affairs Scholarships Award Ceremony 2026 on 18 August, graced by Guest of Honour, Mr. K Shanmugam, Senior Minister, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs.

The award highlights outstanding individuals committed to the Home Team's core values of honour and unity in safeguarding Singapore.

Congratulations, Thor! We wish you the absolute best as you step into this meaningful career of service.

Asian Culture in a Bite #4

Did you know that the Peranakans use a distinct Malay-based language called “Baba Malay”? The pronunciation of Baba Malay differs from Standard Malay as it has influences from the Hokkien dialect. ✨

With fewer than 1,000 speakers left in Singapore and another estimated 1,000 in Malacca, Malaysia, this unique language is at risk of fading away.

Here is how Baba Malay compares to Standard Malay in everyday speech:

1️⃣ How are you?
Standard Malay: Apa khabar?
Baba Malay: Apa khabair? (Notice the -air ending, typical of the Baba Malay accent!)
Example: "Apa khabair? Lama tak jumpa." (How are you? Long time no see.)

2️⃣ My name is...
Standard Malay: Nama saya...
Baba Malay: Nama gua... (Uses gua, derived from Hokkien for "I/Me")
Example: "Nama gua Ben." (My name is Ben.)

3️⃣ I am from...
Standard Malay: Saya dari...
Baba Malay: Gua lagik... (Lagik is used in Baba Malay to denote origin/location)
Example: "Gua lagik Melaka." (I am from Melaka.)

4️⃣ Thank you
Standard Malay: Terima kasih.
Baba Malay: Kam siah (Borrowed directly from Hokkien)
Example: "Kam siah banyak banyak." (Thank you very much.)

5️⃣ Cockroach
Standard Malay: Lipas
Baba Malay: Kachuak (Borrowed directly from Hokkien)
Example: "Ada kachuak!" (There’s a cockroach!)

Learning a language is not just about memorising the words, it is also about understanding and appreciating its culture!

Today, HCIS celebrated Singapore’s National Day by giving back to the community and showing that every small act of kindness can make a difference through our annual HCIS Gives Back event.

💖 Our students and staff came together to contribute to the community in different ways. Some spent time with senior citizens, sharing meaningful moments through conversations, games and activities, while others rolled up their sleeves for a beach clean-up to help keep our environment clean. 🌱

Through these experiences, we hope to remind our students that caring for others and our environment is something we can all play a part in.

HCIS celebrates another year of Global Diversity Day! On this day, our students and staff wore ethnic costumes from various countries, including the Hanfu of China, Áo Dài of Vietnam and many others! 🌎🥻👘

Thank you to Peranakan Sayang for hosting such a wonderful session on Peranakan culture! Everyone loved and enjoyed singing and dancing along to the traditional Malay songs 🎶 It was a delightful experience and great reminder of the rich and diverse cultures we have in HCIS that makes our school community so special!

🎺 BEIJING BAYI SCHOOL GOLDEN-SAIL WIND ORCHESTRA CONCERT is coming to HCIS! 🎶

Founded in 1987, the Golden-Sail Wind Orchestra of Beijing Bayi School is one of China's leading student wind orchestras.

As a representative of numerous high-profile performances in Beijing and China, the band has recently earned First Prize at China's prestigious 8th National Primary and Secondary School Arts Performance Exhibition, organised by the Ministry of Education. They have also represented the city and nation on major cultural exchanges and concert tours.

Join us for a wonderful evening of music by the Golden-Sail Symphonic Band of Beijing Bayi High School as they perform a selection of traditional and symphonic pieces.
