Despite following his passion and curiosity for medicine, and experiencing firsthand what doctors do, Dr Stewart Retnam (senior resident, NHG Infectious Diseases Residency Programme) was initially not convinced that medicine was his calling.

It was only when he began practising as doctor that he realised that he couldn’t “imagine doing anything else”.

Dr Retnam’s passion for medicine has earned him numerous accolades over the years, from receiving the Scholarship as its pioneer cohort (2013), to the NHG Residency Peer-Teaching Commendation Award, and NHG Most Valuable Player Award.

Dr Stewart Retnam’s journey from a curious medical student to a compassionate doctor was shaped by innovation and opportunity. From LKCMedicine’s pioneer Class of 2018, he’s won multiple awards as a young doctor and today pays it forward by setting aside time to teach medical students.

He recalls how as an LKCMedicine Scholar, the award allowed him to fully immerse himself in his studies, while cutting-edge technology like digital cadavers and AI models prepared him for the evolving world of healthcare.

Now a senior resident in infectious diseases, his passion for medicine continues to grow, making a real-world impact in patient care.

She was presented with the SCDF Community Lifesaver Award last month for her initiative and act of courage.

[Three Community First Responders commended for saving a life]

On the afternoon of 17 September 2023, Dr Vianne Lau, a doctor with Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), was playing badminton at Heartbeat@Bedok ActiveSG Sport Hall when she saw a man collapsed nearby. After ascertaining that the man had no pulse or breathing, Dr Lau immediately commenced Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Mr Chow Wei Jun, a Guest Officer from Sport Singapore who was in the vicinity, also sprang into action and joined Dr Lau in administering CPR.

Sport Singapore Lifeguard, Mr Lionel Lo Chee Voon, was also alerted of the incident. He promptly retrieved an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and medical equipment. The trio used the AED to deliver a shock to the man and the man regained consciousness before the arrival of SCDF’s Emergency Medical Services.

Thanks to their timely lifesaving actions, the man is alive. Kudos to Dr Lau, Mr Chow and Mr Lo! In recognition of their public-spirited act, the trio were presented with the SCDF Community Lifesaver Award on 4 December 2023. The award was presented by COL Chew Keng Tok, Commander, 2nd SCDF Division.

You too can help someone in distress by downloading SCDF’s myResponder app and registering as a CFR via the app. Through the app, you can be alerted to nearby emergencies such as cardiac arrest incidents or minor fires that can be quickly attended to by members of the public who are in the vicinity.

Over the two-day Chief Resident Induction Programme, the 34 new CRs got the opportunity to hear from senior clinicians about their leadership journeys; picked up tips on resilience, wellness, negotiations, and conflict management; and they were also introduced to the fundamentals of complex human systems, as well as a little bit of stretching (through Yoga) to help ease them into their new leadership roles.
