How can the stories of local communities enable us to understand a place better?
Join us at and (re)discover Waterloo Street through the roots, stories and voices of those who work and dwell here.
Through photographs, personal narratives and community-contributed memories, we aim to shed light on the local communities that breathe life into one of Singapore’s oldest and richly-diverse neighbourhoods.
For generations, varied inhabitants – from workers to students and residents – have woven a tapestry of traditions, struggles, triumphs and everyday moments that often go unnoticed. Whether it is the cobbler who patiently mends each pair of shoes with care, the family-run shop serving aromatic herbs and traditional spices or the shopkeepers sharing their love for rare trading card finds and vintage collectibles, every story offers a window into the soul of Waterloo Street, while bearing testament to the resourcefulness, resilience and creativity of local communities.
Understanding a place is more than just geography. Behind every street corner, shopfront and faded cobblestone, there are real people with relatable stories – stories of resilience, passion, perseverance and cultural pride.
Come celebrate and honour the stories that shape Waterloo Street and share your own to our living archive. 🌱

What if the spaces we inhabit today are destined to vanish tomorrow?
Set along the locale of Waterloo Street, Isaiah Cheng’s exhibition of staged self-portraits traces the residual presence of a city. Photographing himself as a flaneurish mid-century familiar stranger, each image draws the past into view through quiet acts of embodiment.
Step into Stamford Arts Centre this Singapore Night Festival to experience this profound reflection on the interplays between past and present; remembering and forgetting, transience and permanence. Contemplate how a place holds its history, and how that history might be conjured – if only for a moment – before vanishing again.

From mid-August to November 2024, a group of Arts and Culture Management (ACM) students enrolled in the final edition of “ACM203 Introduction to Visual Arts Management” embarked on co-producing the inaugural Objectifs Junior Festival. Central to the Festival was the outdoor exhibition, which was sited outdoors at the Objectifs courtyard.
Here is a final look back and archival documentation of the exhibition, which served as the curatorial spine of the Festival.
When conceptualising the exhibition, a starting point of inspiration was the physical space for the Festival. Apart from being inspired by the visual elements of the Objectifs courtyard, the team was also driven by a simple yet transformational idea: what if everyday objects could tell us more about ourselves?
This eventually led to the development of an exhibition that aimed to deepen one’s understanding of our physical environment by prompting a closer (re)look at everyday objects—often dismissed as “mundane” and “inconsequential” — to (re)consider the significances we assign to them.
Importantly, the exhibition served as the foundational base for the creative workshops and programmes of the exhibition, where participants were invited to investigate the hidden stories within everyday objects, making space for introspection and imagination. The overall Festival aim was to foster curiosity and build a supportive space for young minds to explore their ideas. By nurturing these voices, young audiences would hopefully be empowered to share their stories, build confidence and feel valued for their unique perspectives.
