More than three decades after leaving secondary school, I still have a chatgroup with three of my former form teachers.
So over the Teacher’s Day weekend, I texted them to thank them for the role they played in shaping me when I was just a teenager.
I was very fortunate to have very good teachers in my formative years.
Among the three, one showed me what dedication looked like. He would return our homework on the very same day and our tests the very next day.
One was fresh out of college when she taught us. She blended with us and showed genuine care, even calling us the night before the O Levels to check on everyone. This was the 90s, before group chats or WhatsApp. She had to call us one by one using a landline.
Another was a firm but fair teacher who showed me the importance of professionalism and principles.
Feeling thankful because these experiences strongly shaped my teaching ethos at Study Room: to work hard for the students, to care for them, and to be firm yet just in my classroom discipline.
Without their positive impact, Study Room might not have made it this far, 12 years and counting.
Happy Teacher’s Day to all the teachers who have touched my life. I hope I can leave the same kind of mark on my students that u left on me.
