Why Tanglin is Special to Me: Empowering, Dynamic, Inclusive
"I joined Tanglin in August 2024, having previously attended a public school in Beijing. I have always been fascinated by economics; how economic principles can be applied to understand real-world issues and the decisions that shape society. I decided to participate in the Singapore National Economics Olympiad because I saw it as an excellent opportunity to strengthen my understanding of economics beyond the classroom, gain deeper insights into the subject, and challenge myself in a competitive environment. Most importantly, the Olympiad gave me an opportunity to test my own abilities and prove to myself that I was capable of applying my knowledge in a rigorous setting. My proudest moment was seeing my hard work and interest in economics translate into tangible progress (I won an individual distinction!), which further motivated me to continue exploring the subject.
Studying economics has changed the way I understand global events by teaching me to look beyond their immediate political or social causes and consider the incentives, trade-offs, and economic consequences behind them. It made me realise how interconnected economies are, and how a conflict in one part of the world can affect prices and consumers across continents.
What I have enjoyed most about my time at Tanglin is its incredibly diverse and international environment. Being surrounded by people from different countries, cultures, and perspectives has constantly challenged me to look beyond my own experiences and become more open-minded in the way I approach different issues. My proudest moments at Tanglin have been the opportunities to contribute to this community through activities such as cultural fairs, debate, and my own projects, while also learning from the people around me. I think this combination of diversity, curiosity, and openness is what has made my experience at Tanglin particularly meaningful."
