Goodbye Ramadan Moon. We hope to see you again next year!

What comes after Ramadan? Its Syawal. Muslims celebrate Eid-Ul-Fitri, or better known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri here in Southeast Asia; on the 10th of April this year.

This photo was taken against the backdrop of a full moon in mid-Ramadan in 2021.

One more picture book about the excitement of a boy who feels he is old enough to observe fasting in Ramadan!

My First Ramadan" by author, Karen Katz
First published 2007.

This book is surprisingly informative. It covers the basic knowledge about β˜ͺ️ Islam β˜ͺ️ with simple one-page explanation about the Koran (Qur'an), Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), fajr, iftar and the celebration marking the end of Ramadan, Eidul-Fitr.

Lovely illustrations showing the boy at home, in school and in the mosque.

πŸ’¬ πŸ—¨ :
- How are the boy's environment same or different compared to your child? Eg:

"His house has this and this. What about ours?"

"The boy tried fasting. Hows your fasting today? How are you feeling"

"He also goes to the mosque. Just like us, yes? Which mosque would you like to go tonight?"

"He also celebrated Eidul-fitr. We also celebrated Eid. We call it 'Hari Raya'. (For older children, you can discuss on traditions vs culture).

How do you wish Muslims during Ramadan?

It is the first day of Ramadhan. As I typed this, we have completed our fasting with the breaking of fast also known as Iftar.

Deliberately waited for today to post about this cute book I spotted in Bukit Panjang ! "Aali's First Ramadhan" by local Singapore author and illustrator!

Today was someone's first Ramadhan. It could be a preschooler (not obligatory until one reach puberty), a primary-schooler, teenager, a youth, a new Muslim revert or anyone!

Side track: My husband just shared with me that a Buddhist colleague asked him for today's time to break fast. My husband was pleasantly surprised! Apparently, his colleague has been joining the Ramadhan fasting since ten years ago.

So this cute Ali in the book wanted to join Big Sis to "puasa" (Malay for fasting). His enthusiasm is relatable! As the hours past, his body started adjusting and crave play sets in. His activities for the day turned into his favourite local delicacies. In his imagination. πŸ˜‹

Lovely book for read-aloud if you wish to introduce the significance of Ramadhan in Singapore. Nice book to make as a gift.

Ms Zarinah Ali, the Zentangle teacher.
Check out her IG:

"As a child and teen, i enjoyed crafting and doodling. However, such creative pursuits took a back seat as I was immersed in work as an adult. In 2011, I was looking for an art form that is easy, fun and quick as I was a busy and stressed out full time working mum of two. I stumbled upon a Zentangle class and from there I was hooked and attended more Zentangle classes.

In 2019, I went to USA to get certified as a Zentangle teacher. Since then, I have been teaching Zentangle to family, friends and colleagues.

In Zen Doodle, I will be introducing to children the Zentangle Method in which tanglers are encouraged to slow down and appreciate what they had drawn as well as to embracing any "oops" they make in their drawing. In the process, I hope to impart in the children that in Zentangle there are "no mistakes, only opportunities".

Exactly one more week to Zen Doodles Workshop at TLC Hub, 444 Serangoon Road. Register at the link in bio!

We celebrated Eid recently, marking the end of Ramadan. In Singapore, the celebration is commonly known as Hari Raya Puasa.

These three books showcased the three cultural festivals celebrated by the main ethnic groups in Singapore - Malay, Chinese and Indians.
It would be nice to add on more selections of cultural- themes books from around the world!

The iconic villain is a loving father afterall; as portrayed in this book by Jeffrey Brown. Happy Father's Day, Darth Vader! 😊

Children are never too young to experiment with ingredients and cooking methods in the kitchen. ☝🏻With adult's supervision, of course. πŸ“šWith these information books, we can facilitate reading through the contents. The children can read the ingredients and identify the quantity needed. πŸ›’ Writing down a shopping list is another literacy opportunity! Give your child the task to scribble down the things to buy. Empower them!

And the cooking/baking comes after!

I pinned up a small mini poster with simple details of Like A Book's holiday activities on our neighbourhood's Notice Board, with very little expectations of any sign-ups. I just wanted to make the board look merrier. πŸ˜„

So it was a wonderful surprise to receive a text enquiry from one mom. She enrolled her daughter, "I" for the Iβ™‘Daddy Special. We spent a good half an hour reading from the book buffet followed by a mug-personalising activity.

She said she is the happiest when her pilot daddy has his off days.
