Try core exercises that work apart from the traditional situps and crunches. Functional exercises that help with stability in the shoulders, torso and hips are great alternatives.

My favourite one is the WEIGHTED CARRIES.
This is an awesome way to practice transferring force through the body. Carry the weight in one or both hands and simply walk for a distance or period of time. Focus on maintaining length in the torso, and don't bend or twist. These carries can done by carrying the weight by your side (s) or pressing the weight overhead.

For 2 years, one of these ladies used to suffer terribly from back pain. Today she can participate in Bodypump and Bodycombat classes with no problems after working on her core.
Strong core💪 => reduce injury 😀
