“I thought I was starting from zero. I wasn’t.

At 51, Jumahat moved from graphic design into healthcare.

It looked like a career switch. But it was also a transfer of skills.

Years of explaining ideas, solving problems, understanding people’s needs, adapting quickly, and working with teams did not disappear. They became useful in a new setting.

Today, as a Therapy Assistant, those skills support how he works with patients and healthcare teams.

A career switch does not always mean starting over. Sometimes, it means learning where your experience fits next.

“My manager and senior nurses practised with us before the assessment, and that made me feel more prepared. The things we were assessed on are similar to what I do at work, like transferring residents from bed to wheelchair.” - Quezada Michael Gallardo, Healthcare Assistant at PCF Sparkle Care, Participant of the Assessment Only Pathway (AOP) for the WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare (Community Care).

For Michael, AOP was not about starting from zero.

It was about demonstrating the care skills he already applies at work, with preparation and support from his team.

“During the assessment, the assessor also shared some knowledge, which was good because we could learn from it.”

For Michael, AOP provided a pathway for the care skills he uses every day to be formally recognised through the WSQ Full Qualification in Healthcare (Community Care), without attending full training courses.

Developed with the Agency for Integrated Care - AIC Singapore, the Assessment-Only Pathway (AOP) adopts a skills-first approach by recognising the competencies that in-service staff already demonstrate at work.

Participants undergo assessment based on their existing knowledge and performance, enabling faster attainment of nationally accredited WSQ certification without the need for additional training.

Equipping the community with life-saving skills, one step at a time. 💙

We were heartened to support Rare Disorders Society (Singapore) at Carry Hope 2026, engaging the community through essential first responder skills and emergency awareness.

At our booth, community members had the opportunity to practise CPR techniques on a manikin, learn how to recognise emergency warning signs, and better understand the importance of early intervention. Participants also explored venepuncture demonstrations, helping to raise awareness on the importance of regular blood tests and preventive health screening in a more approachable way.

Through these hands-on experiences, participants gained greater awareness of how timely action, preventive care, and simple skills can support safer outcomes in everyday situations.

Through approachable, hands-on learning, HMI Institute supports more people in building the confidence to respond in emergencies and take charge of their health.

Thinking about a mid-career switch?

One of the biggest fears is starting from zero.

In his interview with MONEY FM 89.3’s The Agenda, our General Manager, Mr Lee Mun Choon, shares his own move from the military into healthcare training, and what helped him enter a new field.

For anyone considering a move into healthcare, this conversation offers a practical reminder: you may not be starting from zero.

Your past work experience, people skills and ability to work under pressure can still matter in a care-related role.

The Agenda: Can you choose a new career without sacrificing stability? - Your Way Home with Hongbin Jeong These days, careers don’t always follow a straight line. More people are leaving industries they’ve spent years building a career in — whether it’s to chase a passion, find better work-life balance, or simply start fresh. But making a mid-career switch into a completely different field can f...

A simple skill can change how someone responds in an emergency.

At Learning Neighbourhood @ South West, organised by Lifelong Learning SG and South West CDC, we engaged participants through a CPR demonstration that introduced basic emergency response skills in a hands-on setting.

Through the session, participants experienced how these simple techniques can be applied in everyday situations, while also learning more about healthcare and community care training pathways under the Care Economy.

At HMI Institute, we focus on creating opportunities for more people to engage with essential care skills in practical, accessible ways.

Confidence in emergencies often starts with knowing how to respond. 💙

At Naalai Namathe 3.0, organised by Seithi.Mediacorp, participants took part in a guided CPR challenge that introduced basic emergency response skills through hands-on practice.

Alongside this, we shared healthcare and community care training pathways under the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP), helping participants understand how they can continue building skills for roles in the care sector.

At HMI Institute, we believe access to simple, applied skills can help more people feel prepared in everyday situations, while also opening pathways into healthcare and community care roles.

After a stroke, recovery at home can feel uncertain.

Should you help with every movement?

Or give space for the person to try?

For many caregivers, the hardest part is knowing when to support and when to step back.

CPR and BCLS are often confused, but they are not the same.

CPR + AED supports basic emergency response when someone collapses or stops breathing.

BCLS + AED goes further and is often required for healthcare and clinical roles, covering CPR + AED, adult and infant choking response, and structured life support skills.

Not sure which one you need?

Start with your role and where you will use the skill.

It’s not just stiffness.

When someone with arthritis starts moving less, it can quietly affect their strength, balance, and confidence.

For caregivers, the answer is not always to take over.
