🎹 Rockschool vs ABRSM – Clear, Honest Comparison for Parents 🎼
(Especially useful if your child just transferred to me and their previous school was promoting Rockschool)

Dear Parents,

Recently, several students who transferred to Charlot Muzik shared that their previous music schools were strongly promoting Rockschool instead of ABRSM — and some parents felt confused about credibility, difficulty and real value.

So we decided to put together a straightforward, honest comparison — including feedback we’ve gathered from music teachers, students and parents around the world. Our goal is clarity and confidence for your child’s music pathway.

🎓 1️⃣ Both Boards Are Legitimate & Recognised Internationally

✔ ABRSM – Long-established and widely accepted globally (UK, Singapore, USA, Europe, Asia).
✔ Rockschool (RSL) – Also recognised worldwide and growing rapidly, especially among contemporary players.

Both have exam centres in many countries and certificates that hold value internationally.

📚 2️⃣ Digital Exam Requirements & Piece Count

🎼 Rockschool (Classical Digital / Performance Certificate)
• Students prepare 5 pieces chosen by the student.
• Includes free choice and popular styles.
• More room for personal music interest.

🎹 ABRSM Performance Grade (Digital)
• Students prepare 4 pieces — 3 from ABRSM lists + 1 own choice.
• Repertoire is classical-oriented.
• Structured to build classical technique and style.

📌 ABRSM Practical Exam (In-Person) also includes scales, sight-reading & aural tests — making it more comprehensive than performance-only exams.

🎯 3️⃣ Difficulty & Skill Development (Worldwide Parent/Student Feedback)

⭐ Students & Parents (ABRSM):
✔ Often describe ABRSM as more challenging technically but providing deeper musicianship.
✔ Many feel the structured syllabus builds stronger long-term musical skills.
✔ Classical training helps with music theory and performance confidence.
✔ International recognition is often seen as industry standard.

⭐ Students & Parents (Rockschool):
✔ Students enjoy playing more of the music they love (pop, rock, contemporary).
✔ Many feel the 5-piece requirement is fun and flexible.
✔ Some parents appreciate the performance-oriented exam with less pressure on sight-reading/aural.
✔ Particularly popular with band / modern music students.

📌 General trend:
🎼 ABRSM is preferred by students aiming for classical certificates, diplomas, university/music programmes.
🎸 Rockschool is preferred by contemporary players, band students and those who thrive on performance.

Feedback from worldwide parents often reflects:
➡ ABRSM is seen as more rigorous and comprehensive, building long-term technique.
➡ Rockschool is seen as more fun and accessible, especially for keeping students motivated.

💰 4️⃣ Exam Fees (Singapore)

Fees vary by grade, instrument and exam session, but generally:
• ABRSM practical exams are slightly higher than Rockschool.
• Rockschool can be more affordable, particularly at early grades.

Fees also depend on examiner availability and administration costs each year.

🌍 5️⃣ Recognition & Pathway Value

ABRSM
✔ Widely recognised by institutions internationally
✔ Often used for music scholarships, academic credits, school placements
✔ Strong foundation for theory and aural skills

Rockschool
✔ Recognised internationally, especially for contemporary music
✔ Great for performance confidence and modern styles
✔ Increasing acceptance in music schools and communities

Both certificates carry meaning — but their strengths differ.

✨💛 A Truly Heartwarming Teacher Moment 💛✨

Today, my heart is really full, and I want to share something very special with all of you.

One of my students, Taylor, did something I will remember for a very long time. In my 12 years of teaching, she is the **only student** who took the initiative to not just write theory notes… but to organise them, design them, decorate them, and turn them into her very own beautifully crafted **music theory notebook**. 📘✨

When she showed it to me, I genuinely felt so touched. Every page was filled with care — neat handwriting, thoughtful layout, creative details. You can truly *feel* the effort and love she put into it. It wasn’t just homework… it was something she poured her heart into.

I gently shared with her how proud I am of her, because with her attitude — well-organised, disciplined, thoughtful, and always turning plans into action — I believe she will go very far. Not only in music, but in every part of her life. Students like her remind me why teaching brings so much meaning.

I hope all my students can learn from Taylor’s spirit:
💛 Put your heart into what you do
💛 Be disciplined and consistent
💛 Take action, not just plan
💛 Create something that makes *you* proud

Thank you, Taylor, for inspiring even your teacher today. 🌟
Keep shining, keep growing, and keep believing in yourself.

Anyone knows what song is this based on the introduction?🤣 Nothing to do so took out my ukulele self-taught from YouTube 🤣

🎶 Today my student suddenly said not coming for lesson… so I decided to have a little me time 😆
Ended up jamming on the drums for fun — and wow, it feels so good to just feel the beat again! 🥁😂

Actually, learning piano really helps to feel and understand the beat — it’s all connected in music! ❤️✨

🎹 Even Teachers Struggle Too — But We Keep Learning 🎶

This morning after my tennis lesson, I was having breakfast when I suddenly heard a beautiful song on TikTok — “Love Theme.” 💖 I fell in love with it instantly and couldn’t wait to go home to try it on the piano.

I started playing it on my upright piano at home… but I couldn’t help feeling it was a little wasted — this song would sound so much more expressive on a grand piano. 🎵✨

And honestly, I struggled a bit while playing. 😅 It reminded me that even teachers have moments where things don’t sound perfect — but that’s part of learning.

🌱 Slow progress is still progress.
With diligence, commitment, and persistence, every small step adds up to something beautiful. ❤️

To my students — don’t be afraid to share your practice videos, not just the perfect ones. 💪
Celebrate your growth, embrace your mistakes, and keep improving bit by bit. Remember, practice doesn’t make perfect — it makes progress! 🎶

Let’s enjoy the journey together. 💖

🎹✨ Last week, Taylor played Blue but it felt a little empty, without much feeling. So I sat down with her and explained how to bring out more emotions in her music.

And today… WOW. 🤩 It was so impressive that I literally forgot to breathe while listening! I had to hold my breath and focus completely on her playing—I didn’t even dare to say “good” or “nice” like I usually do with my students. That’s what a true performance is: when the music makes everyone quiet, simply listening with their hearts. 💖

Taylor felt a bit sad because she made some mistakes, but I told her—people don’t count your mistakes. What they will always remember is how your music makes them feel.

Bravo, Taylor! 👏👏 Keep shining through your music! 🌟

🎶 Student Spotlight ✨ – Jared 🎶
(28 Sept 2025 Piano Recital)

At this recital, Jared played the popular TikTok song “Blue” – a piece I specially chose for him because I knew it would become a spotlight performance. 💙 It’s such a hot trend on TikTok, and I was right – when I asked the audience if anyone knew the song, many students (especially the younger ones) raised their hands! One performer, who is usually very scared of performing, even bravely stood up and shared in front of everyone that she knew this song. I could feel her excitement, and it made the moment even more special. 🌟

Jared himself is a very shy and quiet boy in class, but he is also a fast learner. His mum once told me that when he first started practicing this piece, he cried because it felt so tough for him. Having just finished his Grade 5 exam, he found the rhythm and coordination of this song so different from what he was used to.

But what I admire is Jared’s resilience. By the second lesson, he started to relax and play much better. His strong sense of rhythm carried him through, and lesson by lesson, I saw his confidence grow. 🎹✨

A big thank you as well to his parents, who always ensure he practices properly after every progress update I give. That support at home makes a huge difference. 💕

When Jared performed “Blue” on stage, the entire recital hall went completely silent – everyone was so focused on his playing. It was such a powerful and unforgettable moment. 🙌 And after the recital, some students even came to me and said they wanted to learn the same song too – ahahaha, so contagious! 🎶💙

Great job, Jared! 👏 I’m so proud of your progress, and I’m excited to walk with you on your Grade 6–8 piano journey ahead. 🌟

🎶 Student Spotlight ✨ – Yi Han 🎶
(28 Sept 2025 Piano Recital)

Yi Han is such a cute and cheeky student! 😄 Every time I praise her during lessons, “Ohhh you play so good~” she will show her proud little face. 💕 After that, she plays with even more confidence and starts talking more too – it’s so wonderful to see her open up.

But what I admire most is her resilience. When I correct her and ask her to repeat, she doesn’t complain. Instead, she stays quiet, focuses, and works harder – even though I can feel she’s stressed sometimes. Her toughness really shines through in those moments.

Her mummy often tells me that at home, Yi Han says, “So tough, don’t want to practice.” 😅 Yet right after lessons, she always says she wants to practice! That makes me laugh but also makes me proud – it shows her determination and love for music are truly growing.

On recital day, it was so funny to see the usually talkative Yi Han suddenly become so serious and quiet – she didn’t even dare to talk! 🤭 I guess sometimes the most chatty kids become the most silent in stressful situations. But I must give her a big round of applause 👏 because this was her very first performance ever – not even in school before! And she still faced the stage bravely. 🌟

And that day, I also noticed something new – Yi Han sat up so straight and elegant on stage! ✨ Such a beautiful posture. In lessons before, she sometimes sat like a boy 😅 but slowly she changed, and that day was the best sitting posture I’ve ever seen from her. It really added to her confidence and presence on stage. 💖

I believe Yi Han can go very far in her piano journey. With continuous encouragement and the belief that she can play well, she’ll only grow stronger. 🎹✨ Confidence and encouragement are such powerful reinforcements – they help children build both musical skills and resilience in life.

So proud of you, Yi Han! 🌸

🌸 28 Sept 2025 Piano Recital Highlight – Arissa’s First Performance 🌸

Every week, little Arissa comes to class beautifully dressed by her mummy, with the sweetest and loveliest smile. 💕 This recital was extra special because it was her first ever piano performance!

A few days before, I asked her if she might feel nervous on stage. She looked at me and said… “I will cry.” 😅 Hahaha, such honesty from a child’s heart!

On recital day, instead of walking up with me, she chose to go on stage with her mummy – and I must say, that was the best decision. ❤️ Her mummy has been such an amazing support, always checking in with me about Arissa’s progress, and patiently guiding her at home. I truly appreciate that, because I know not every parent has the time or patience to do the same.

The moment I saw her mummy sit beside her on stage, softly counting “1, 2, 3, 4” to help Arissa stay calm, my heart melted. 🥹 And you know what? That was the best I’ve ever seen Arissa play – so calm, so smooth, so steady.

This reminds me once again: 🎹 Parents play such an important role in a child’s learning journey. With love, patience, and encouragement, children can overcome fears, face stressful moments, and achieve their goals step by step. 🌟

Thank you, Arissa & mummy, for this beautiful memory! 💖
