Why Small Changes in Your Voice Create Big Changes in Perception

One of the most rewarding parts of coaching is seeing clients discover how quickly their communication can improve with the right techniques.

Recently, a client shared with me about how learning about the musicality of voice, strategic pauses, and word choice immediately changed the way others perceived them. This transformation is something I see often. Communication isn't just about what you say. It's about how you say it.

At Be The Voice, we go beyond traditional speech training. Drawing from years of real-world experience, I help clients understand the subtle vocal tools that build confidence, credibility, and connection. These are practical techniques that can be applied immediately in presentations, meetings, interviews, and everyday conversations.

Here are some tips I often share with students during our sessions:

1)Use Vocal MusicalityAvoid speaking in a flat, monotone manner. Varying your pitch, pace, and emphasis keeps listeners engaged and helps your message sound more authentic and persuasive.
2)Master the Power of the PauseA well-placed pause creates impact, gives your audience time to absorb key points, and makes you appear more confident and composed.
Great communication is a skill that can be learned. With the right guidance, even small adjustments can make a remarkable difference in how others see and hear you.

I recently had the pleasure of conducting a communication and presentation skills workshop for the team at Biochromatographix, and it was an incredibly rewarding experience.
From the very beginning, the team was engaged, open-minded, and eager to learn. We focused on reducing filler words, improving voice techniques and enunciation, and building confidence when speaking and presenting. What stood out to me most was the participants' willingness to step outside their comfort zones and embrace the learning process.

One of the highlights of the session was the presentation practice component. Each participant delivered a short presentation, which we recorded and reviewed together afterwards. This proved to be one of the most valuable parts of the workshop. Often, we are unaware of our own speaking habits until we see ourselves from the audience's perspective. The recordings gave everyone the opportunity to identify areas for improvement, whether it was reducing filler words, speaking with greater clarity, improving vocal variety, or projecting more confidence.

There were moments of surprise, laughter, and valuable self-discovery as they recognised both their strengths and areas they could work on. The discussions that followed were constructive and encouraging, allowing everyone to reflect on their progress and gain practical insights they could immediately apply.

Here are two tips that I shared with the team:
1. Replace filler words with purposeful pauses. Many speakers use words such as "um," "uh," or "like" when gathering their thoughts. We practised replacing these fillers with short pauses instead. A pause not only sounds more professional and confident but also gives the audience time to absorb key points.

2. Slow down and focus on clear enunciation. When we are nervous, we often speak too quickly. By consciously slowing down and articulating each word clearly, speakers can improve their credibility and ensure their message is understood. A measured pace also helps presenters appear more composed and confident.

As a trainer, it was especially gratifying to watch the participants grow more confident throughout the workshop. By the end of the session, there was a noticeable difference in how they approached their presentations. They spoke with greater awareness, clearer articulation, and a stronger presence, demonstrating the impact that focused practice and feedback can have in a relatively short period of time.

Looking back, I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such an engaged group. It was wonderful to see each participant gain valuable insights into their own communication style and leave with practical tools to communicate their ideas with greater clarity, confidence, and impact. I look forward to seeing how they continue to apply these skills in their future presentations and professional interactions.

On 8th may, I got the opportunity to conduct a customised training workshop at ITE College East to a group of students. And it was a genuinely rewarding experience for me as a trainer.
Over the 3-hour session, I had the opportunity to work closely with them on how to deliver engaging and persuasive booth and stage presentations for their student projects.

From the very beginning, the students showed great enthusiasm and a willingness to participate, which made the session lively and interactive. One of the things I always remind participants is that effective presentations are not just about having good content but it is also about how the message is delivered.

During the workshop, I shared simple but important voice tips, such as slowing down their pace when presenting key points and using pauses confidently instead of rushing through sentences. These small adjustments can make a speaker sound more confident and help the audience stay engaged.

Another voice technique we practised was speaking with variation in tone rather than maintaining a flat delivery. Many students discovered that changing their tone naturally helped them sound more expressive and convincing, especially during stage presentations.

It was especially encouraging to see students gradually grow more confident throughout the session. Some who were initially shy became more comfortable speaking in front of others, interacting with their peers, and presenting their voice with greater clarity and energy.

What I personally enjoyed most was seeing the students support and encourage one another during the activities. Their positive attitude and openness to learning created a very enjoyable training environment. By the end of the workshop, many students were able to present with stronger credibility, clearer communication, and a much more engaging presence. It was truly fulfilling to be part of their learning journey and witness their growth within such a short span of time.

One of the most rewarding parts of being a voice coach at Be The Voice Academy is seeing students transform not only their speaking skills, but also their confidence.
I recently worked with a student who came to me with a strong fear of public speaking. English was not their mother tongue, and speaking in front of others had always been a major insecurity. Like many people, they believed confidence was something you had to be born with.

But voice and communication are skills that can be trained.
During our coaching sessions, we focused on practical speaking techniques that could be applied immediately in daily life. Small adjustments made a huge difference.

One of the first things I teach my student is how to slow down when speaking. A calm pace naturally creates more clarity and confidence. Another important technique is learning to pause and breathe before key points. It helps control nervousness while making your message more impactful.

What made me especially proud was seeing this student begin to believe in their own voice. Over time, they became expressive, comfortable, and eventually confident enough to imagine themselves delivering a speech on stage. Something they once thought was impossible.

At Be The Voice Academy, we believe communication is not about sounding perfect. It’s about being authentic, clear, and connected to the people listening to you.

I’ve always believed that every voice has untapped potential and sometimes it just needs the right guidance and a bit of intentional practice to bring it out. Hearing that my exercises helped someone discover a stronger, clearer version of their own voice is exactly why I do this work.

When I coach, I focus on practical, repeatable techniques. It’s not about quick fixes but about building habits that improve how you sound and how you express yourself over time. Articulation, in particular, is something I emphasise a lot. The way we shape words directly affects how confidently and clearly we’re understood.

One thing I often remind my students is that progress comes from awareness. Once you start noticing how you speak, your pacing, your clarity and your tone, you gain control over it. That’s when real transformation begins.

Here are two simple tips I always share:
1. Slow down to gain clarityMost people rush their words without realising it. By slightly slowing your pace, you give your mouth time to form each sound properly, which instantly improves articulation.

2. Exaggerate during practiceWhen you’re training, over-enunciate your words. It may feel unnatural, but it strengthens your speech muscles and builds precision.

Seeing someone walk away with more confidence in their voice is always rewarding. With consistent practice and the right techniques, anyone can develop a voice that truly represents them.

a trainer, I’ve always believed that the human voice is more than just sound but also a tool for confidence, identity, and presence. Working one-on-one with clients reminds me why I do what I do.

One of my students came to me with a deep fear of public speaking as english wasn’t their first language, and that created a strong sense of self-doubt whenever they had to speak up.

Together, we focused on practical voice techniques that were simple and repeatable where they could apply immediately in daily conversations and over time, I saw a real shift. The hesitation started to fade, replaced by growing confidence. Moments like these are why I’m so passionate about teaching. It’s not just about technique but it’s about helping people see what they’re capable of.

We truly want the best for everyone who learns with us. For anyone looking to improve their voice and confidence, here are two tips I can share:

1. Start with your breath.Your voice is powered by your breath. Slow, controlled breathing helps steady your tone and reduces anxiety instantly.

2. Practice out loud, daily.Don’t keep practice in your head. Speak out loud even if it’s just reading a paragraph. Consistency builds muscle memory and confidence faster than you think.

Seeing my students grow reminds me that investing in your voice is one of the most valuable decisions you can make both personally and professionally.

I still remember the first session with a particular student. Quiet at first, observant, the kind of learner who’s already tried a few things and is searching for what actually works. That’s something I see often at Be The Voice. Many people come in thinking communication is just about getting the words right.

As a trainer, my approach has always been simple: respect your time, and focus on what truly works. Most of my students are working adults, so I structure every session to be tight, intentional and applicable.

What I emphasise early on is this: communication isn’t just about what you say. It’s about how you say it. A sentence can fall flat or come alive depending on your articulation, intonation, and the emotion you allow yourself to express.

I saw that shift happen here.

At the start, the delivery was clear but safe. Neutral. Like many professionals, the voice carried information, but not yet a story. Over time, as we worked through articulation drills and layered in context, something changed. Pauses became intentional and emphasis started to highlight meaning.

That’s when communication transforms. You’re no longer just speaking but you’re engaging.

One thing I take pride in is keeping everything easy to follow. Voice work can feel abstract if it’s not grounded properly, so I make sure every exercise has a purpose.

And when a student tells me they’ve gone from sounding “boring” to feeling like a storyteller, that’s the goal. Not performance for the sake of it, but the ability to hold attention, to connect, to make your message land.

If there’s one thing I hope every student walks away with, it’s confidence in their own voice and not a trained voice that sounds artificial, but a refined version of what’s already theirs.

Seeing students grow and hearing them want to come back is what keeps me going. The voice is a powerful tool. Most people just haven’t been shown how to use it yet.

When I think about why I do what I do, it always comes back to moments like this.

One of my students, a bright and curious 11-year-old, came into my class with his own set of challenges. Particularly in articulation and reading confidently for oral examinations.

From the start, I made it a point to connect with him beyond just the lesson material. I brought in his personal interests, added humor into our sessions, and created an environment where learning didn’t feel like a chore, but something he could actually look forward to.

Over time, I began to see a shift. He grew more confident in the way he expressed himself. His reading became clearer and more deliberate. The same student who was once hesitant started to engage more, laugh more, and take ownership of his progress.

One of the key things I always emphasise to students is that a strong voice isn’t about being loud. It’s about being clear and intentional. Here are two simple tips I often share:

1. Slow down your speech. When you rush, your words tend to blur together. By pacing yourself, you give each word space to be heard and understood.
2. Open your mouth when you speak. It sounds simple, but proper mouth movement improves articulation significantly and makes your speech much clearer, especially during oral exams.
Hearing that he found my lessons “fun and interesting,” and that he would recommend my classes to others, means a lot to me.

That’s always been my goal. Not just to teach, but to make learning enjoyable and meaningful. Knowing that he feels more prepared for his oral examinations is incredibly rewarding.

Moments like these remind me that teaching isn’t just about delivering content. It’s about building trust, understanding each student as an individual, and helping them find confidence in their own voice.

If you’re wondering whether this could help your child too, I’m always happy to have a conversation. I offer a free 30-minute assessment session with no obligation. It’s simply a chance for us to chat, understand your child’s needs, and see how I can help. Feel free to view our available slots down in the link below and book at your own convenience!Assessment Booking Link: https://calendly.com/bethevoice/free-voice-assessment🗒️

As a trainer, nothing is more rewarding than witnessing a student discover the strength and clarity of their own voice. When I work with someone, my goal is never to change who they are, but to help them unlock what is already there. Refining, strengthening, and bringing it forward with confidence.

Hearing that my practice tips and exercises have helped someone achieve a better version of their voice reminds me why I do this. Voice work isn’t just about sound; it’s about expression, presence, and connection. When a student learns to articulate their words more clearly, they’re not just speaking better but also being understood in a deeper way and connecting with their audience.

I often share simple but powerful techniques. One tip I emphasise is slowing down your speech. When you give your words space, clarity naturally improves and your message lands with greater impact.

Another would be practicing exaggerated articulation during exercises. By over-enunciating in training, your everyday speech becomes sharper and more precise without feeling forced.
Every session is a shared journey. I guide, but the real progress comes from the student’s willingness to explore, practice, and grow.

Knowing that the experience was meaningful and impactful tells me we walked that path well together.
