A child’s first piano experience can shape how they feel about music for years to come. The Piano Explorer Programme is designed to make that beginning feel guided, encouraging and purposeful.

Is it time to make space for dialects? It is a question Singapore has been asking again following the response to the Teochew film “Dear You”, and the wider conversation it sparked about dialect, cultural identity, and whether these voices should be heard more freely in public.

But decades ago, Holland Village had a space where dialect-based culture could be heard under the open sky. At Lorong Liput once stood the Eng Wah open-air theatre.

Established in the mid-1950s, it became known for Chinese wayang and served as a familiar neighbourhood gathering place. Audiences sat on rows of simple benches, watching stories unfold through music, movement, costume and voice.

The theatre eventually closed in 1985. Today, Holland Piazza stands where the open-air cinema once operated. The structure is gone, but the question it leaves behind remains relevant: What happens to culture when there is no longer space for it?

This resonates with us. To give culture a place to live. Because languages, music and traditions do not disappear all at once. They disappear when we stop making space for them.
