ITI proudly partnered with ATAM for the Nam Marabu Therukoothu Masterclass Series, held from 8 to 13 June at ITI Studio 3. Led by Master Palani Murugan, the series gave ITI students and performing artists in Singapore the chance to experience the intricacies of this traditional form.
Therukoothu is a vibrant, traditional Tamil street theatre that originated in Tamil Nadu over 2000 years ago, known for its high-energy movement, powerful vocal delivery, and rich storytelling.
Following the workshop, we had the privilege to watch the Living Epics: Therukoothu showcase featuring Master Palani Murugan at the Indian Heritage Centre (IHC). Through music, movement, and storytelling, the performance beautifully celebrated the richness of Tamil folk traditions.

Year 1 and 2 students rounded off Semester 1 with their Post Modular Lab (PML) presentations - original, student-driven performances created in response to their recent Immersion in the traditional Indian theatre form of Kutiyattam.
The PML is a key aspect of actor training at ITI, encouraging students to explore, experiment, and develop their artistic voice through independent performance-making. This term’s works reflected deep inquiry into Kutiyattam techniques, through psychosomatic alignment. A combination and alignment of the mind, body, hands, and eyes.

Year 2 actor-students presented Euripedes’ Medea, in a version by Ben Power. The focus this term is on the application of text analysis and psychophysical approach to acting. "What is the relationship between action, thoughts and speech?"
In Acting for the Contemporary Stage, ITI students explore classical and contemporary works from around the world. Over six weeks of rehearsals, beginning with a composition phase where students creatively responded to the text, they developed ideas for staging and physical vocabulary and explored themes of gender, representation and violence.
