If accounting is merely about compiling reports and generating information, that part of the work will inevitably be replaced by technology.
What remains truly valuable is the ability to use financial data to understand the real substance of an organisation.
A company with large assets is not necessarily a strong company. When operating assets are high but revenue remains relatively low, it may point to weak asset efficiency, an imbalance in business rhythm, or questionable asset quality.
The warning signs become even clearer when intangible assets, development expenditure, and goodwill account for a large share of operating assets.
The real question is not whether the numbers look impressive. It is whether those assets are truly supporting sustainable business growth.
The future of accounting belongs not to those who only produce reports, but to those who can read what lies behind them.

What does it mean to trust AI?
As part of the launch of the Global Institute of Finance, Technology, and Society (GIFTS), Prof Will Cong led a discussion with Bidyut Dumra (DBS Bank), Giuseppe Marazzotta (AWS), Yang Wenhui (Tencent), and Phillip Chew (Keppel) on a pressing question for the AI era: how do we build trusted digital infrastructure and financial services as AI systems become increasingly autonomous?
As AI agents move beyond answering questions to negotiating, transacting, and making decisions on our behalf, trust becomes about more than technology. It requires accountability, transparency, strong governance, and human oversight.
While perspectives differed on how trust is built, one message was clear: the future of AI depends not only on what these systems can do, but whether they remain worthy of our trust.
Thank you to Prof Will Cong and all our panellists for this thoughtful discussion.

This US module has been a powerful reset for both mind and heart. It wasn’t just another overseas class, but a journey that refreshed how I think, learn and lead.
The most unforgettable moments came from being in Stanford’s classrooms, engaging face to face with world-class faculty. Instead of simply listening, we questioned, debated and dug into topics I had been curious about for years, turning theory into sharp, practical insight.
I’m returning with a clearer sense of direction and a stronger inner drive: no longer working only for personal success, but truly hoping to create social value and solve real-world problems. Grateful to NTU and this journey for opening up a bigger world – and a more powerful version of myself.

What if one of the biggest risks facing businesses today is not being measured adequately?
As organisations strengthen their sustainability efforts, climate-related reporting has become increasingly common. Yet another critical challenge is gaining attention: biodiversity loss.
Nature is more than a backdrop to economic activity. It provides essential ecosystem services that underpin business operations, from pollination and water filtration to carbon storage, climate resilience, and access to biological resources.
The challenge is that biodiversity risks are often difficult to detect. Ecosystems can appear resilient for years, masking a gradual loss of redundancy and increasing fragility beneath the surface. As highlighted in the NBS–PRI–ECGI Public Lecture Series review, When Nature Fails, Markets Follow, small ecological losses today can lead to significant economic and financial consequences tomorrow.
This raises important questions for business leaders, investors, and policymakers:
• How should biodiversity be measured and reported?
• How can organisations account for nature-related risks in decision-making?
• What role can businesses play in building resilience and creating long-term value?
As the conversation evolves from sustainability to regeneration, understanding the relationship between nature, business, and financial systems will become increasingly important for future leaders.

“Many of the most important questions today cannot be solved by one field alone.”
This conviction, shared by Professor Will Cong, sits at the heart of GIFTS.
From AI and digital finance to emerging economic systems, the challenges ahead demand deeper collaboration across technology, business, economics, and society.
The launch is just the beginning. We look forward to collaborating with researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators to advance responsible innovation and translate frontier ideas into real-world impact.
